Froch Challenged to Golovkin Fight, Hints Negotiations Are Out of His Control

Monday, July 6

Froch was told to put his money where his mouth is after claiming on social media he is "too big and too strong" to face the Kazakh.

Froch provoked the challenge with this tweet:

Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler quickly responded, insisting "there's only one way to find out."

Loeffler's words summarised the opinion of many, including ESPN journalist Dan Rafael, but Froch sharply responded to a tweet from Rafael, seemingly suggesting it is not solely down to him to make the fight:

Froch has not stepped into the ring since defeating George Groves in May 2014. Now 38 years old, Froch is nearing retirement and may only fight once more, if at all.

The Cobra has won 33 of his 35 career fights, 24 of his victories coming by knockout.

Reigning WBA and IBO middleweight champion GGG has an even more impressive record, having won all 33 of his bouts, including a phenomenal 30 knockouts.

A clash between the two stars would be a mouth-watering prospect and undoubtedly welcomed by boxing fans.

However, boxing reporter Dominic Verdin believes the 38-year-old is hoping to avoid a clash with the unbeaten Kazakh:

If Froch did take on Golovkin, it would likely be the biggest fight of his career.

While a win would allow Froch to bow out at the top of his game, Golovkin represents a serious risk and a potential spoiler at the end of his career.

Should Froch decide to fight one more time before retiring, he may opt for an easier opponent than the 33-year-old Golovkin.

However, Froch has made a rod for his own back with his tweet. If he retires or takes on anyone other than Golovkin, his stock among boxing fans is sure to take a hit.
