Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo is "unsettled at Real Madrid," according to Spanish publication Marca (h/t Jamie Sanderson of the Metro). As such, the Portuguese superstar is being linked with a move away from the Bernabeu.

United are always in the conversation when Ronaldo is reported to be unhappy, such is his standing at the Old Trafford club. Sanderson's article suggests he is "upset at the lack of trophies this year, and a transfer could be on the cards." Madrid will finish this season without winning any silverware—and could watch on as rivals Barcelona potentially secure a historic treble—but Ronaldo has enjoyed individual success.

He is on course to win this year's Golden Shoe award, having racked up 45 goals in La Liga. Barca's Lionel Messi is his closest competitor for the European prize, but the Argentinian needs to net four in the Blaugrana's final match of the season to draw level. However, contrary to what many Ronaldo pessimists believe, Marca's report indicates he is looking for team success.

United haven't won a trophy since the 2012-13 Premier League was captured, so the Red Devils aren't an obvious choice if CR7 seeks immediate silverware. Louis van Gaal's side completed their main objective of returning to the Champions League this season, but remain 15 points behind champions Chelsea. They also failed to put together a significant cup run this year.

Things are expected to improve—especially as United fans can anticipate a summer of squad investments—but Ronaldo is far more likely to land team success in Madrid.

Sanderson's report suggests Paris Saint-Germain "have made an offer," perhaps providing an alternative option to a United return. The Ligue 1 side recently captured their third consecutive domestic title and could certainly satisfy Ronaldo's thirst for trophies.

United continue to be linked with Gareth Bale, Ronaldo's team-mate, reported by James Robson of the Manchester Evening News. The Spanish press also suggests he could be on his way out, with AS reporting (via George Bellshaw of the Metro) that the Welshman's agent will meet with Madrid president Florentino Perez to "inform him of Bale's desire to leave the club."

However, John Cross of the Mirror believes "crunch talks" have led to Bale looking "certain to stay." Such conflicting reports summarise a transfer saga that will no doubt rumble on until the player makes his feelings known publicly.

All the signs point toward United confirming at least one megastar signing this summer. Ronaldo remains Los Blancos' most important asset, but it is interesting to consider the notoriously pro-Madrid Marca suggesting he could leave.

These rumours circle often, however, so United fans will likely refrain from becoming excited over the possible return of their hero.
