The Edmonton Oilers have tabbed Todd McLellan as their next head coach.
The team confirmed the news on Tuesday:
Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli heaped praise upon McLellan, per Sportsnet: "Todd's one of the top coaches in the league. His work ethic is tremendous."
The Oilers added more comments from Chiarelli: "He's the guy we wanted and I wanted to get on that in a hurry".
McLellan talked about the sort of player he is looking for with his new team, per the Oilers: "I want young players who are craving to win... Your gut tells you when it's right."
McLellan spent the last seven years with the San Jose Sharks. Although his teams were extremely successful during the regular season, his tenure will likely be remembered for the Sharks' infamous postseason flameouts.
Despite posting a .637 average points percentage between 2008 and 2015, San Jose made it no further than the conference finals. The franchise reached its playoff nadir in 2014, squandering a 3-0 series lead in the first round against the Los Angeles Kings.
Still, few would argue with McLellan's coaching acumen. You don't win 311 regular-season games in seven seasons otherwise.
The 47-year-old has a tall task ahead, though, should he be the man to lead the Oilers. Edmonton hasn't made the playoffs since 2005-06. The franchise does own the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft, where it's expected to select Connor McDavid.
Scott Wheeler of McKeen's Hockey feels that McLellan's and McDavid's potential arrivals won't stop the institutional issues endemic in Edmonton:
The Oilers are at least a year away from seriously contending, but McLellan has a solid track record. As long as the organization is committed to the rebuild, he should bring success in the long term.
The only question is whether management will be willing to give him time to put his stamp on Edmonton.
