Chicago Cubs superstar Anthony Rizzo is dealing with back pain and will reportedly go on the disabled list.
Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reported the first baseman has suffered lower-back pain since last week and was placed on the 10-day DL retroactive to Friday. That means he is eligible to return to the lineup April 16 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Rizzo remains one of the game's most dangerous power hitters, with at least 30 home runs in four straight seasons and at least 100 RBI in three straight campaigns. This year, he's hitting .107 with one homer and three RBI in just six games.
The 28-year-old has continued to prove that all of the hype that made him one of the top prospects in baseball when the Boston Red Sox drafted him in 2007 was well-founded. He and superstar Kris Bryant have given the Cubs one of the most dangerous one-two power punches in the National League, fueling the middle of the team's dangerous lineup.
His loss is a big one for the Cubs, and the team will be hoping the injury doesn't linger. The longer he is out of action, the harder it will be for the club to compete for another postseason berth.
Players such as Bryant, Addison Russell, Jason Heyward, Ben Zobrist—who may end up moving over to first base alongside Victor Caratini—and Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber, among others, will need to step up in Rizzo's absence. But even with one of the deepest lineups in baseball, replacing Rizzo will be difficult for the Cubs.
