Miller Discusses Future After Crash

Friday, Feb. 6

Bode Miller talked to Pat Graham of the Associated Press about his crash, and what it means for his career:

Bode Miller says if his crash at the world championships was indeed his last race he's all right with that because his career has been "an amazing ride."

In his first interview Friday since surgery on his severed right hamstring tendon, Miller tells The Associated Press he is still contemplating whether to return next season. He and his wife have a baby due in May, and Miller says he doesn't want to race "if I can't commit the time and energy."

According to Graham, there was a secondary cut beyond the gruesome one that severed a tendon in his leg, and that Miller attempted to get the doctor to stitch up the outer injury so he could continue racing.

Miller Suffers Gruesome Injury in World Championship Crash

Thursday, Feb. 5

American skiing sensation Bode Miller was injured Thursday during a run at the World Ski Championships in Beaver Creek, Colorado, suffering an ugly cut on his leg.

Analyst Brian Stemmle posted a photo on Twitter of the cut. (Warning: The image is graphic.)

Nick Zaccardi of NBC Sports provided a video of the crash, including a brief image of the injury at the end, via NBC OlympicTalk:

According to the official United States Ski Team Twitter account, the accident occurred after Miller got his arm caught on one of the gates:

Miller provided an update on himself following surgery:

The U.S. Ski Team also provided more detail on the crash, noting that Miller led by a half-second before crashing and that he was able to stand and wave after.

Zaccardi offered various images from Miller's crash, including one of a young fan unable to watch what was happening:

Miller was making his return to competitive skiing at the World Ski Championships after recovering from back surgery in November that was limiting the use of his left leg. He won bronze in the Super-G at the 2014 Sochi Olympics last February and posted the same result at the World Cup in March.

John Meyer of The Denver Post wondered if this would be the end of Miller's career:

Hopefully this injury doesn't derail Miller. At 37, the American star isn't in his skiing prime anymore but still has the ability to put a good run together in a competitive event.

Regardless of whether or not this crash will bring Miller's career to an end, it's an unneeded setback in what has been a long, arduous road back to competitive skiing.
