Kansas City Fan Promised Puppy If Royals Beat A's in AL Wild Card Game

Kyle Newport

There was a lot on the line at Tuesday's American League Wild Card Game between the Oakland A's and Kansas City Royals, but one Royals fan had more on the line than most fans did.

During the game, cameras spotted a Royals fan who was holding a sign saying she was promised a puppy if her team won.

Update from Tuesday, Oct. 7

The Royals won, and true to the sign, the female fan got a puppy.

Kansas City held a 3-2 lead after three innings, so everyone was rooting for her to get her wish.

However, Oakland appeared to deliver a huge blow to any chance the fan had of getting a puppy by taking a 7-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

With just four at-bats left and facing A's ace Jon Lester, a four-run deficit looked too big to overcome. It wasn't.

The Royals used speed to get back in the game. They scored three runs in the eighth and tied the game in the ninth. No winner had been decided after nine innings, so the game went to extras.

After a 29-year postseason drought, most Royals fans at Kauffman Stadium would never have thought about leaving a winner-take-all game. However, the "puppy fan" was nowhere to be found in extra innings.

Big League Stew's Nick Bromberg wrote that after he or someone from Yahoo Sports figured out that the "puppy fan" was sitting in the left field stands, he went looking for her once the game went into extra innings. He was unable to find her:

We showed her picture to fans in section 208. Upon seeing the picture, the fans in the front rows immediately recognized her and turned and looked three rows back and pointed to ... an empty bank of seats.

She had been sitting behind them but was now gone.

It's very possible that she may have been sitting or standing elsewhere in the stadium. As a matter a fact, it looks like she did move somewhere else in order to change things up a bit.

Of course, Kansas City walked off with a 9-8 victory in the 12th inning. Maybe the "puppy fan" moving to a different part of the stadium was enough to change the momentum of the game and help her get a puppy.
