Despite two victories to open his managerial account with United—the first was a 7-0 victory over LA Galaxy—the Red Devils' new boss was unhappy after the Roma win.

Having defeated the Italian side, the Dutchman is still clearly eager for an improved performance in the Inter clash, per BBC Sport's Simon Stone:

I am pleased that we have won but it was not a good performance. 54,000 people came to watch us but we can perform much better. All my good passers failed today. I think it was because of the height and the air. [Juan] Mata, [Ander] Herrera and [Shinji] Kagawa - these are the best passers (at the club), and everything went wrong.

Wayne Rooney bagged a second brace to add to his double against Galaxy and will no doubt be tasked as the talisman against Inter as he continues to shine, per The Independent's Ian Herbert:

However, as Van Gaal highlighted, the likes of Mata, Herrera and Kagawa have more to prove if they are to impress their new manager.

As with the opening two games of United's pre-season tour, wholesale changes will likely be made at half-time at FedExField with Van Gaal eager to find his best starting team ahead of the new Premier League season.

After last term saw United finish seventh in the English top flight under David Moyes, a strong pre-season is essential to build confidence within the side, and a win against Inter would be encouraging.

Although it was something of a second-string Madrid side which Walter Mazzarri's team overcame on Saturday, Inter's victory has clearly been good for confidence.

After a Gareth Bale wonder goal, Mauro Icardi's penalty evened things up, and the Serie A side went on to win 3-2 on spot-kicks.

Mazzarri is eager for Inter to return to the top of Italian football, having finished fifth in Serie A last season, per Peter Hanson on Goal.com:

At this moment of the year we can't decide on our target for next season. But it's clear that when you coach a team like Inter you want, as soon as you can, to bring the team back to where it belongs because of its history. We have had a good beginning during this pre-season and we have some interesting young players. We have started a new era at Inter and our mentality, our attitude, must be that of a team who are never satisfied and who always play to win, regardless of who our opponents are.

United will pose a significant threat, as they have looked impressive going forward in their pre-season encounters so far.

However, the presence of Vidic—who immediately slipped into Inter's side against Real—should be advantageous for the Italians considering his knowledge of the opposition and overall quality.

The winner of the D.C. encounter will be in prime position to top its International Champions Cup group and make it to the final having won its opener.

But it should be a well-fought match between two top sides both looking to return to the top of their respective leagues in the upcoming term after recent failures.
