Liverpool Transfer News: Latest on Loic Remy Medical, Javier Manquillo Imminent

Nick Akerman

Brendan Rodgers will not directly discuss Liverpool's heavily anticipated deal to sign Loic Remy, but reports suggest the French striker's medical results should be known by the end of the week.

As reported by Ben Burrows of the Mirror, Rodgers isn't willing to disclose information about signings until they have gone through:

"Until they are signed and agreed to come in I will only talk about them then," said Rodgers. "I shall not talk about speculation on any player until they have signed."

Various outlets continue to report the transfer is as good as done, with the Daily Mail's Dominic King saying Remy completed his medical on Tuesday in Boston. He states the results "should" come back on Thursday in an alternate article, meaning the switch is likely to be confirmed by the weekend.

James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo says Remy was scheduled to meet up with the Reds squad on Monday night and will be considered for Sunday's friendly against Olympiakos in Chicago.

The 27-year-old is expected to become Rodgers' fifth summer signing after Rickie Lambert, Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic joined the club, adding much-needed firepower to a front line that is now without Luis Suarez.

Remy's pace, finishing ability and direct style of play suits Rodgers' ambitious attacking style and certainly galvanises the side's cutting edge in the wake of last season's 31-goal hero leaving. Further signings are likely to join Remy right away, according to King's tweet:

Liverpool are also expected to complete a loan move for Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo, once again reported by King. The 20-year-old made three La Liga appearances last season and will be brought in to offer Glen Johnson cover, perhaps allowing Jon Flanagan to focus on the left-back role.

Andy Hunter of the Guardian suggests a left-back signing remains "priority," but Liverpool must up their bid for Sevilla defender Alberto Moreno after missing out on Ben Davies. The Welsh defender is set for a move to Tottenham Hotspur, per the Daily Mail's Sam Cunningham.

While Hunter indicates Liverpool want to include a view to permanently signing Manquillo in the agreement, K. Sampedro of Marca reports that Atletico will refuse, translated by 101 Great Goals.

Instead, a two-year loan deal will allegedly be confirmed.

Rodgers will hope the decision works out better than his move for Aly Cissokho, who failed to impress in defence during his temporary move from Valencia last term.

Plenty of numbers are flooding into the Anfield squad. Liverpool's return to the Champions League ensures Rodgers' spending needs to outline real quality.

Lambert and Lallana are yet to feature in Europe's elite competition but have remained impressive with Southampton, while Can, Markovic and Remy have experience in the tournament. Manquillo even managed to notch a 90-minute appearance and contributed toward keeping a clean sheet during Atletico's 2-0 win over Porto in December, per WhoScored.com.

It's certainly a busy time for Liverpool, who are conducting their business from the other side of the world during the club's preseason tour of the USA.

Rodgers' work ethic has been impressive throughout his tenure and continues to head into overdrive to ensure his squad is ready for a season crammed with fixtures.

Expectation is rising on Merseyside, as Liverpool bid to capture their first Premier League title during the 2014-15 schedule.

Last season ended in heartbreak with a second-place finish, but with a host of new signings coming in, Rodgers' men will be refreshed and ready for the challenge when the English division returns.
