A thrilling game in Porto Alegre was settled by substitute Memphis Depay's winner, as the Netherlands overcame a determined Australia side to win 3-2.

Arjen Robben gave the Dutch the lead in the first half with his third goal of the tournament, only for Tim Cahill to immediately equalise with a brilliant volley.

Australia then took the lead with a cool penalty from Mile Jedinak, only for Robin van Persie to equalise and then Depay to grab the winner when his effort from distance went through the dive of Matt Ryan.

Half-time analysis for Australia

Ryan: Underworked and left exposed for Robben's goal. Made comfortable save on Van Persie.

McGowan: Getting forward when he can.

Wilkinson: Largely solid, although could get closer to Robben for the goal.

Spiranovic: The same as his partner but comfortable.

Davidson: Not afraid to get physical when he goes forward.

Jedinak: Providing the strong platform for those ahead to shine on.

Bresciano: Missed a great chance to give his side the lead following good work from Leckie.

McKay: Steady if unspectacular.

Leckie: Cahill's goal aside, has been the bright spark for the Aussies and the player always looking to make things happen.

Oar: Like Leckie, is in the team to provide the legs for Cahill. Buzzed around impressively.

Cahill: Could have become frustrated but instead scored a quite brilliant goal.

Ryan: He'll forever be remembered for allowing Depay's show to find the net, although did make a good save from De Jong. 

McGowan: Grew tired and wasn't much of a threat going forward.

Wilkinson: Struggled to keep up with the Dutch side's pace.

Spiranovic: Not enough of a leader at the back when one was needed.

Davidson: Got forward well but question marks over his defensive capabilities. Played Van Persie onside for his goal.

Jedinak: Coolness personified from the spot, and dealt with De Guzman and De Jong well.

Bresciano: Taken off early in the second period. Looked his age.

McKay: Disappointing and off early in the second half.

Leckie: Tailed off somewhat after fine first half and was let down by Oar when in a crucial position.

Oar: Lacked composure at a vital moment, blazing a cross across goal when he could have either shot or passed to Leckie. Depay scored seconds later.

Cahill: Tired and had to be replaced. Will miss the Spain match through suspension.

Bozanic: Won the penalty and offered an outlet.

Halloran: Didn't make much of an impact.

Taggart: Could start instead of Cahill against Spain.

Cillessen: Had absolutely no chance with Cahill's stunner.

Janmaat: Not offering enough of an outlet.

Vlaar: Could be sacrificed if Van Gaal switches to four at the back.

De Vrij: Solid, although goal came from his side.

Martins Indi: Looked uncomfortable after Cahill's early challenge and then stretchered off after the second one.

Blind: Not as impressive as he was against Spain.

De Jong: As physical as ever.

De Guzman: Looking somewhat lost.

Sneijder: A misplaced pass to Robben summed up his disappointing first half.

Robben: A fine, typically Robben-type goal which arrived just at the right time for a struggling team. Needs to be more visible in the second half though.

Van Persie: Somewhat anonymous despite a weak header on goal.

Cillessen: Had no chance with either goal but was in right place to stop a Leckie effort.

Janmaat: Gave away penalty somewhat unfortunately but did improve when switched to a more conventional right-back.

Vlaar: Took on the mantle of dominant defender following Martins Indi's departure.

De Vrij: Solid and looks a classy performer destined for good things.

Martins Indi: Didn't appear for second half.

Blind: Like Janmaat, improved when switched to a more conventional defender.

De Jong: Took on responsibility following Depay's goal, refusing to allow his side to be overrun in midfield.

De Guzman: Disappointing and could find his place under threat.

Sneijder: Improved from the first half, but still nowhere near his best.

Robben: Always the outlet and his team's best player; the wide man looks set to be the inspiration behind the Dutch challenge.

Van Persie: Clinical finish, although a booking means he'll be missed against Chile.

Depay: Added inventiveness and quality when he came on. Assisted Van Persie and then grabbed the winner via a helping hand from Ryan.

Wijnaldum: Didn't have an impact.
