Russia manager Fabio Capello has named his provisional squad for next month’s World Cup Finals in Brazil, and there is no place for ex-Arsenal man Andrey Arshavin or midfielder Dmitri Tarasov.
There is, however, a surprise call-up for Reading forward Pavel Pogrebnyak, who has been with the Championship club for almost two years following a brief stint at Fulham.
The 30-year-old has not represented his country since Euro 2012, but received the nod from Capello ahead of former Tottenham Hotspur striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.
Tarasov’s omission owes much to a cruciate ligament injury suffered earlier this year, while Pavlyuchenko’s exclusion is perhaps the biggest shock of all.
They booked their place at the South American showcase after finishing top of their qualifying Group, and they will face South Korea, Belgium and Algeria once the competition is underway.
