Competition has been fierce for places in the Argentine squad. The Albiceleste are tipped as one of the favourites for the 2014 World Cup, and plenty of quality players have been left out in the cold by coach Alejandro Sabella. 

But who did make the cut for the Seleccion? The 30 men who make up the provisional list of call-ups are noted here, along with their vital statistics and what can be expected of them in the upcoming festival of international football. 

Sergio Romero

Quick-Hit Fact: Ironically given his ample height, the 6'4" Romero's nickname is Chiquito (Tiny). As a child, he was dwarfed by his two basketball-playing brothers, who gave him the rather unjust tag. 

Quick-Hit Stat: An otherwise undistinguished spell with AZ was marked by a run of 955 minutes without conceding a goal, just 107 from the Dutch league record. 

Mariano Andujar

Agustin Orion

Brief Bio: While most Argentine players seek fame and fortune abroad, Orion has played his entire career in his home nation. Orion is an accomplished keeper, and while he is unlikely to play much part at the World Cup, he fully deserves the call-up. 

Quick-Hit Fact: He's won Argentine championships with three different clubs: San Lorenzo, Estudiantes and Boca Juniors. 

Quick-Hit Stat: Orlon is one of five players in the squad playing their club football in Argentina. 

Pablo Zabaleta

Brief Bio: A fixture on the right side of defence, the Manchester City star is also adept at switching flanks. Zabaleta is solid in defence while getting forward often enough to contribute in Argentina's offensive efforts. 

Quick-Hit Fact: He captained Argentina to their Under-20 World Cup victory in 2005 and was also a member of the 2008 Olympic gold-medal team.

Quick-Hit Stat: With 11 yellow cards, Zabaleta was this season's most booked player in the Premier League. 

Gabriel Mercado

Federico Fernandez

Quick-Hit Fact: A prospective move to Napoli in 2010 was delayed for six months due to difficulties in securing an EU passport. 

Quick-Hit Stat: Fernandez's debut with Getafe was a game to forget; the team was thrashed 6-1 by Barcelona, with international team-mate Lionel Messi getting one of the goals. 

Ezequiel Garay

Marcos Rojo

Martin Demichelis

Lisando Lopez
