Comcast SportsNet Accidentally Airs NSFW Image of Cubs Mascot

Dan Carson

If you were scratching around Twitter earlier this week, you’ll likely have noticed that people don’t like the Chicago Cubs' new mascot.

The Cubs released pictures and literature Monday afternoon introducing the franchise's first official mascot: a pants-less, backward hat-wearing character dubbed "Clark the Cub."

As mentioned, Wrigleyville’s new kid-critter was met with mixed reviews—or perhaps more accurately, a torrent of negative feedback. The mascot was widely touted as gimmicky, immature and unprofessional.

Shortly after the Cubs' announcement, Tom Ley of Deadspin (NSFW) entered the fray and asked readers to fire up their Adobe Creative Suite and do horrible, abominable things to the new mascot. The site kicked things off by featuring Gawker art director Jim Cooke's rendition, which included a set of furry genitalia to the pants-less bear-child.

From there, a veritable zoo of unspeakable Clark the Cub creations were pumped out into the Internet, but it was the original Deadspin alteration that ended up accidentally airing on a live edition of Comcast SportsNet in the Washington area.

The show's anchors were discussing the public backlash spawned by Clark the Cub when a shot of the NSFW Deadspin photoshopped version showed up on the screen. Video of the ridiculous moment was spotted by Pete Blackburn of Next Impulse Sports.

Warning: Video contains NSFW bear bobbles.

Yep, viewers stared at the sight of a furry, downtown mixup on their screen for nearly 10 seconds before the image was brought down. The anchors tried to make the best of it, calling it a "gaffe photo," which is another way to admit you accidentally aired a bear phallus on television.

The damage was done, however; you cannot un-see fuzzy bear bangles when they’ve been piped into your home in high definition.

We can only assume that some intern somewhere made the mistake of grabbing a thumbnail of Clark the Cub without checking the full image for...uh...extra equipment.

The Cubs, meanwhile, are standing by their mascot, as per Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. Although I forecast them weathering this media storm and continuing on, they’ll never be able to live this one down.

Clark the Cub: loves pizza, skateboarding and a cool breeze.
