Florida State WR Jarred 'Scooter' Haggins Out for Season with Knee Injury

Bad news tends to come in threes, and in the case of Florida State's senior receivers, that old wives' tale has (unfortunately) proven itself true.

Coach Jimbo Fisher announced on Wednesday that Jarred "Scooter" Haggins suffered a serious knee injury and will miss the entire season. Per Coley Harvey of the Orlando Sentinel:

Fisher announced Wednesday afternoon that the Seminoles had lost their third senior receiver and seventh overall pass-catcher of the offseason.

Jarred "Scooter" Haggins, another promising player who the team anticipated would be a major factor in its passing game, will be sidelined for the year with a stress fracture in his knee.

Haggins finished the 2012 season with just 108 receiving yards, the most of his three-year career in Tallahassee. But given the Seminoles' attrition of receivers/tight ends this offseason, he was expected to take on a bigger role.

That attrition includes two other senior receivers who are expected to be out for the season. Most notably (and saliently), Greg Dent was charged with second-degree sexual assault, leaving his status very much up in the air. Though Florida State hasn't officially ruled him out for the season, Harvey reports that his name has been removed from all preseason depth charts.

Dent finished last season with 27 catches for 355 yards and was expected to be a starter in 2013.

Willie Haulstead, who "Hauled" in 38 catches for 587 yards as a sophomore in 2011, is the third member of the Seminoles' sorry senior trio, ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming season. According to Harvey, receiver Marvin Bracy, along with tight ends Christo Kourtzidis, Kevin Haplea and Jeremy Kerr, will also miss the season for various reasons.

Which is all to say that up until his injury, Haggins was being counted on to help assuage those losses. But in the blink of an eye, he became a contributing member of them.

The Seminoles still have three experienced returnees—Rashad Greene, Kenny Shaw and Kelvin Benjamin—back in the fold and a couple of promising freshman, so it isn't like the cupboard is suddenly bare. But it's not as stocked as it was and should have been.

Assuming freshman Jameis Winston wins the job at QB, he'll have to earn every yard he gains.
