Kevin Kolb Reportedly Injures Knee Slipping on Mat at Bills Training Camp

Quarterback Kevin Kolb signed with the Buffalo Bills this offseason in hopes of earning a starting job, but bad luck and frustration have followed him to Western New York as a freak injury could threaten his ability to beat out rookie E.J. Manuel for the team's top signal-caller spot.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Kolb injured himself at Bills training camp on Saturday by slipping on a wet mat.

The Associated Press elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the incident, as Kolb was reportedly running between fields when the injury occurred. Kolb didn't fall, but he twisted awkwardly and had trouble standing without the help of Bills head trainer Bud Carpenter.

Kolb was clearly frustrated by the situation, as he reportedly threw his helmet down in disgust. It's tough to blame Kolb for reacting that way since he has been dealt a tough hand at the NFL level. Injuries caused him to lose the starting job to Michael Vick with the Philadelphia Eagles, and a rib injury ironically suffered against the Bills last season cut his tenure short as the Arizona Cardinals' starting quarterback.

It seemed as though Kolb was the front-runner for the starting job this season after signing with the Bills, but Buffalo surprised many pundits by selecting Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. All indications are that Manuel has looked sharp in training camp, so Kolb had his work cut out for him even before the injury.

Per the AP report, Kolb had his knee examined before going back to the locker room. It remains to be seen how long Kolb could potentially be out, but every snap missed puts him further behind the eight ball in terms of the quarterback competition.

If he is unable to play in Buffalo's first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 11, then Manuel will have a golden opportunity to put a stranglehold on the No. 1 quarterback spot. Conversely, it's entirely possible that a difficult decision has suddenly been made much easier for first-year head coach Doug Marrone.

Whatever the case, Kolb's status is certainly worth watching in the coming days, as it could have a huge impact on the Bills' season as a whole.
