New uniform designs have become the signature of a number of teams over the years, but the West Virginia Mountaineers are usually not to be found in the discussion.

Until now.

West Virginia is not a team that changes its look often, but its new look is one that fans should be happy with.

“WV” is still on the helmet in keeping with tradition, and it remains at the center of the jersey too. Solid jersey colors are still the dominant scheme, but the addition of new lids to the uniform lineup is the most obvious change.

One major addition is something that fans won’t even notice. There was the addition of the phrase “Montani Semper Liberi” to the jersey neckline. It means “Mountaineers are always free” and is the the state motto. 

Now, when the Mountaineers take the field, they will have helmets which match their jersey color. In the past, their helmets have always been solid blue.

The Mountaineers released photos and a YouTube video announcing the release of their new Nike jersey line prior to the spring game.

The video shows all three uniform schemes and is not a bad hype video. Of all the uniform changes that have come over the past few seasons, this is the most modest and traditional that I have seen.

West Virginia did it right by adding modest changes and keeping with tradition.
