Throughout the history of the hockey there have been iconic jerseys and logos like the Detroit Red Wings' winged wheel that are still around today, but many wish that logos like the defunct Quebec Nordiques' and Hartford Whalers' could be resurrected.

Throughout the years teams have redesigned their look, teams have relocated, and many logos have gone by the wayside.

Here are 25 defunct hockey logos, courtesy of Sportslogo.net, that we wish would be resurrected. 

Detroit Cougars

The Detroit Red Wings styled their Winter Classic jerseys around the Oxford English-styled "D" featured in the Detroit Cougars logo, but it was a one-time occurrence. The franchise was known as the Cougars from 1926-30.

For a team with a rich history like the Red Wings, they should have a jersey that honors an old-time hockey logo like this to represent the history of hockey.

Quebec Citadelles

The Quebec Citadelles were the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens from 1999-2002. This logo was a fierce logo that represented the team well and was one that should be brought out of retirement. 

I personally prefer this logo over the Hamilton Bulldogs' logo, and if the team ever relocates to Quebec, this logo could be put back into use.

Hartford Wolfpack

The Hartford Wolfpack had one of the best uniforms and logos in the AHL before they were renamed the Connecticut Whale.

The logo was fierce and colorful and was well-designed. Hopefully the team eventually reverts back to the Wolfpack, because the current Whale logo isn't cutting it.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets returned to Winnipeg in 2011 after the Atlanta Thrashers were sold to a group led by Mark Chipman.

The "new" Jets decided to use new uniforms upon their return to Manitoba, but diehards would love for this iconic logo to make a return.

This logo is colorful and full of creativity, and the Jets really should consider designing an alternate third jersey around this concept.

Minnesota North Stars

The Dallas Stars are expected to redesign their uniforms under new owner Tom Gaglardi, and this classic logo should be incorporated into the new design.

This classic logo is one of the most iconic defunct logos in NHL history, and the color and shape would make for a wonderful alternate patch.

Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres have had many different uniforms throughout their history, but this alternate logo was one of the best they ever used.

Before the Sabres reverted back to their classic colors, they used a black-and-red color scheme that was very fierce.

The colors and imagery of this logo really should be implemented with the current Sabres' uniform because it would give the team a new and improved look.

Vancouver Canucks

This is a logo that many people have loved and hated throughout the years, but it is a logo that should be used in some fashion by the Canucks.

This skate is colorful and full of luster, and it is a good representation of the team that Pavel Bure starred for during the 1990s.

Manitoba Moose

The Manitoba Moose had one of the fiercest AHL logos when they were the minor league affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.

The team was forced to relocate out of Winnipeg when the Jets returned to play at the MTS Centre in Manitoba, and they were relocated to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

This logo is well designed, and it should be brought back in some way very soon.

Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators used this logo for 10 years until they released a modernized version of the "senator."

This logo was simple yet well-designed, and one that could be used on an alternate third jersey or as a patch one of their current jerseys.

Youngstown SteelHounds

The Youngstown SteelHounds of the Central Hockey League had a well-designed logo that really stood out amongst other mundane and amateur logos.

Although the team is no longer in existence (folding in 2008), this concept should be used by another hockey team that uses a dog in their logo.

New York Rangers

The Lady Liberty logo of the New York Rangers is a fan favorite that was featured on an alternate third jersey for a number of years.

There were two forms, one in navy and one in white that is very hard to find today.

This logo needs to be brought back by the Rangers, because it is one of the most popular logos amongst the fan base.

Although the logo lives on through Henrik Lundqvist's mask, Lady Liberty needs to be back on a sweater.

Saint John Flames

From 1993 to 2003, the Saint John Flames were the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames.

Some AHL teams have amateur-looking logos, but during its heyday Saint John had one of the best designed logos in the entire league.

If Flames' fans had their way, they would probably want this logo back.

Quebec Nordiques

The Quebec Nordiques relocated and were renamed the Colorado Avalanche in 1995. The Nordiques have a classic logo, but this version of the logo would be great in the NHL today as an alternate jersey patch.

The Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild have featured old logos in similar designs, and I am sure that Avs fans would love it if the team paid homage to the former glory of the Nordiques.

Anaheim Mighty Ducks

The Anaheim Mighty Ducks had one of the greatest logos in the history of hockey, and it was very sentimental to those who grew up in the 1990s.

This logo was linked to the Mighty Ducks' movie series, and everyone remembers classic characters like Gordon Bombay and Charlie Conway.

All in all, the logo was changed when Disney was no longer associated with the Ducks, but this is a logo that needs to be back on jerseys.

Colorado Rockies

This logo may be considered weird because of the color scheme, but it is a vintage logo that represented the Rockies well before they became the New Jersey Devils.

It is a logo that would be hard to implement with the Devils, but in a small dose this logo could be used as a patch or an alternate logo of a "retro" jersey.

Hershey Bears

The Hershey Bears changed their primary logo for the 2012-13 season to a more classic and simpler logo honoring the team's 75th anniversary.

Although the logo is nice, this version of the Bears' logo should be brought back soon. It was a fierce and iconic logo that was synonymous with the success of one of the AHL's top teams.

Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers recently stopped using this logo, and it is unclear why. This logo is a variation of their current logo, so it wasn't like the team was headed in a new direction.

Nonetheless, this logo should be brought back very soon because it would represent the thriving state of the team.

Connecticut Whale

This logo was never used, but it definitely should have been. This logo is a lot better than the logo that was eventually chosen by ownership of the team.

If it is ever possible to adopt the Whalers name, the Connecticut Whale should use this logo because is it crisp and it pays homage to the defunct Whalers.

Hartford Whalers

This logo is one of the best logos that is no longer in circulation, and it is a shame that the Carolina Hurricanes have not embraced the use of their former glory.

The Connecticut Whale attempted to pay homage to the former glory of the Whalers, but the design is too cartoonish.

If NHL hockey ever returns to Hartford, this logo has to make a comeback.

Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings have had their fair share of good and bad logos throughout their history, but this is one logo that should be welcomed back with open arms.

The black, silver and white color scheme was iconic with the Gretzky era in L.A., and this logo and word mark should be embrace by the Kings with on an alternate jersey.

Los Angeles Sharks

The Los Angeles Sharks had one of the most iconic logos from the now defunct World Hockey Association, and it is a logo that the San Jose Sharks could probable implement in some fashion if they had the rights to the logo.

It would have to be something on a large scale, but a small shoulder patch would be a nice tribute to original hockey in California.

New York Islanders

The New York Islanders only have a few years until they move to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, so they should move quickly and reinstate this logo.

Lighthouses are an iconic feature of Long Island, and by bringing back this concept with a modernized color scheme, the Islanders could feature a prominent feature of the community while look great on the ice.

New York Americans

The New York Americans are a defunct hockey team that used to play in New York City, and their color scheme was a precursor to the New York Rangers' classic red, white and blue.

This logo may not fit with the Rangers, but it might work for the Rochester Americans.

Pittsburgh Penguins

This logo is one of the most memorable images from the 1990s NHL, as it was featured across the chests of greats like Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr.

This logo was vibrant and it featured a crisp-looking penguin, and it is a logo that should still be used in some form today.

Vancouver Millionaires

The Vancouver Millionaires were a member of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association that lasted from 1911 to 1924.

This logo is simplistic and it is something that the Vancouver Canucks could probably incorporate into an alternate patch if they acquired the rights to the logo.
