WWE SummerSlam 2012: Why CM Punk vs. John Cena vs. Big Show Will Surprise People

The Doctor Chris Mueller

The new Raw GM, AJ Lee, revealed on Raw that the main event at SummerSlam will feature CM Punk defending his title against John Cena and Big Show.

These three men know each other very well, which will not make this match anything new in terms of matchups, but the match could still end up stealing the show.

Each of these men is a highly talented and capable performer, and with all three knowing each other very well in the ring, it is bound to make things very entertaining.

Let's look at the history between the three men quickly.

CM Punk feuded with John Cena over the WWE title during the latter part of 2011, getting the upper hand and managing to hold onto the title for a staggering 10-month reign.

CM Punk feuded with Big Show back when he was the leader of the Straight Edge Society. They notably fought in a match which saw Big Show remove the mask Punk had been wearing to cover his shaved head.

Big Show and Cena have a history dating back to the very early part of Cena's WWE career, when Cena beat Big Show for his first title in WWE, the US Championship.

The history between everyone here is well documented, so it comes as no surprise that the match is not generating a lot of buzz yet. But it will soon.

With Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H on the card, it seems as if everyone is curious about that outcome, but the WWE title match will actually have farther-reaching consequences.

If Punk wins, then it solidifies him as the top superstar of Raw and makes him the likely candidate to face The Rock at Royal Rumble.

The same can be said for Cena, except for the fact that a win would put him on top again after being without the title for nearly a year.

Big Show winning would indicate that his title run would be short, seeing as The Rock and Big Show having a match is less likely to draw in viewers than one of the other two men facing Rocky would.

The match itself will feature the three basic kinds of WWE superstars, which is why it could end up being the most versatile and interesting match of the night.

You have the giant Big Show, the muscular Cena and the smaller, scrappier Punk.

Each man represents one of the three main archetypes of wrestling to perfection, with the one exception being that none of them qualify as a pure cruiserweight.

Punk and Cena have proven that together they can put on a great match and adding Big Show to the mix will add a sense of danger to the situation.

For all the criticism Big Show receives, you have to give him credit for being one of the most talented wrestlers over 7'0" tall to ever lace up a pair of boots.

He has performed physical feats that the likes of Andre the Giant and Khali would never think of doing, and he has done it numerous times over his career.

As the day of the event draws closer, we are sure to see the angle get ramped up by WWE in an effort to make another match appealing to potential PPV buyers besides Brock vs. Triple H.

With SummerSlam being the second-biggest event on the WWE calendar, it is logical to assume that there will be more drama in the build-up in the coming weeks, especially for this match.

Punk is also on the verge of what many feel is a heel turn, especially after taking out both Big Show and John Cena the week after he shockingly attacked The Rock.

The story behind this match is getting better by the week and I have no doubt that these three men will have one of the main highlights of the night when the dust clears and the bell rings.
