Alberto Aquilani never made much of an impact during his short time with Liverpool, but they won’t miss him now that he’s gone.

Liverpool announced on Friday that Aquilani was transferred to Fiorentina, according to the club’s official website. He only made 28 appearances with Liverpool since joining the club back in 2009. This was mainly due to injury struggles and that he was on loan for the past two seasons with Juventus and Milan.

Aquilani could never live up to the high expectations that were upon him when he came to Liverpool, writes ESPN’s Adam Digby. Digby writes that he will now try to revive his career with a team that’s notorious for doing so.

The loss for Liverpool isn’t a big one at all, besides the money they spent on Aquilani’s original five-year contract.

Liverpool has plenty of “replacements” for him even though he’s really been gone for the past two seasons. They still have Steven Gerrard, Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, Maxi Rodriguez, Jay Spearing, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson, Lucas Leiva and Jonjo Shelvey all at midfield, according to EuroRivals. Liverpool could still acquire another midfielder via transfer as well.

Aquilani rarely played for Liverpool and only scored two goals while he was there. Scoring twice in 28 games isn’t that great for a big-name midfielder. Of course, injury played a big role in why he was that successful, but he still could’ve played better when he was somewhat healthy. Maybe Liverpool was never going to work for him, and maybe he just needs a change of scenery.

“Alberto is a great player and will do very well with Fiorentina,” said Francesco Della Rocca (via ESPN). “He wants to redeem himself after having a less than positive experience with Liverpool. I am convinced that the move to Florence represents a great opportunity to do that.”

Continuing his career with Liverpool wouldn’t have been good for him or the club. It’s basically like Aquilani never even played for Liverpool. He hadn’t played for them in two years and in no way will be missed. Liverpool is better off without him.
