Embattled Football Star Terrell Owens Faces Jail Time over Child Support

Gabe Zaldivar

Terrell Owens is being hit with the harsh reality that his tale of woe could get worse as he faces jail time for missing a court hearing regarding his missed child support payments.

WSB-TV in Atlanta reports Owens missed his hearing Thursday and it may cost him a dose of freedom after the judge working the case became quite angered by the absence.

Channel 2’s Erica Byfield was the only reporter at his child support hearing at the Fulton County Courtroom on Thursday. Owens, a former wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, did not show up, and Judge John Goger was upset.

Owens' attorney, David Hartin, told the judge it was his fault Owens was not there. He said he didn’t communicate well with his client.

Owens better hope the judge buys the excuse that an attorney was just extremely forgetful or just one shoddy communicator.

The report states Owens is on the hook for $20,000 in missed payments to Melanie Smith. She and Owens have a 7-year-old daughter together, and a past agreement mandated the former NFL star pay her $5,000 a month.

Allegedly, he has failed to make a payment in, "months."

Smith's attorney, Ryan Kessler, had this to say, per the WSB-TV report.

It's a tragedy, not only that we are here today; this is the third case she has had to file in the last year...We are hoping next week the case will come to a resolution and Mr. Owens will pay and pay every month.

Judge Goger may have been upset, but he is giving Owens one more shot at making good as the case has been reset for July 19. If he doesn't show, he could face jail time.

Owens still holds out hope he can return to the NFL, a league he dominated for 15 years. But off-the-field issues continue to diminish the likelihood he will be given a fair shake.

The star receiver was recently fired from the Indoor Football League's Allen Wranglers for, what they consider, not making good on his contractual obligations

Trouble continues to find the great TO.
