Manchester United will have to dig a little deeper into their summer funds to complete the transfer of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa after the Red Devils' €16 million bid was denied, according to the Guardian.
The offer for the 23-year-old midfielder was not accepted as Dortmund value Kagawa closer to €20m. But as he cost just €350,000 when the German champions bought him from the Japanese club Cerezo Osaka two years ago, it is thought that the deal may go through next week for around €17-18m.
United have been looking for ways to improve their midfield for the past year or so, and haven't been able to secure the purchase of a star midfielder in the last few transfer windows. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson even had to convince club legend Paul Scholes to come out of retirement to help the team this season.
After finishing second in the Premier League this year and coming so close to winning their 20th Premier League title, United have one of the most important summers in club history ahead of them.
They have several holes to fill on the squad, and they must battle big rivals and spenders such as Manchester City and Chelsea in the Premier League.
After not making the knockout phase of the Champions League this year following their runner-up finish in 2011, it was clear that big changes to the squad, especially in the midfield, must be made.
Since United's rejected bid wasn't too far off from Dortmund's value of Kagawa—which, as the Guardian mentions is around €20 million—it doesn't seem like this transfer negotiation will take much longer.
If all goes to plan for the Red Devils, they could possibly be the first English club to make an impact signing in the transfer window before the European Championships begin next month.
