Like many John Calipari players before him, swingman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist made the leap to the NBA after only one year of college ball.

As a starter for the 2012 NCAA Champion Kentucky Wildcats, MKG was a dynamic playmaker on both ends of the court.

Kidd-Gilchrist is a gifted athlete and a well-rounded scorer.  His ability on the defensive end should allow him to crack the lineup immediately, despite a jump shot that needs work.

What Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Brings to the Team

A raw playmaker, MKG is arguably the most versatile player in the draft.

An elite athlete who can score in a variety of ways, he is also a lockdown defender. A 6'7", 210-pound frame allows him to be an effective rebounder, especially on the offensive end.

He's still just scratching the surface of his potential and his biggest weakness, an inconsistent perimeter game, will be developed in time.

There is a strong chance he becomes a legitimate superstar in this league.

NBADraft.net compares MKG with Andre Iguodala and Gerald Wallace. Jonathan Wasserman writes:

Though he doesn't have the typical upside of a top 2-5 pick, he poses zero risk when you consider his intangibles and physical tools ... Instead of saying he has a low ceiling, it's more appropriate to say he has a high basement ... There's not a team in the league that doesn't have a need for what MKG brings to the table ... He's a two-way player that can contribute in a number of a different ways, and while he's not going to compete for any scoring titles, his strengths can inspire teammates and energize a fan base.

Rookie Impact

The flaws in his game aren't glaring, but they might be enough to keep him from claiming Rookie of the Year honors.

Versatility is key to MKG's game.  While he works on his perimeter game, he will do enough little things to earn big minutes.  Without any attitude concerns, he projects as a consummate professional from day one in the NBA.

Expect him to contribute on both ends of the court and be an all-rookie performer.

Pick Analysis 

The Charlotte Bobcats went an atrocious 7-59 last season, meaning they need a little bit of everything. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is one of the most versatile players in this draft and can make an immediate impact in the NBA. At 6'8, 230-pounds, MKG is a threat because he can penetrate into the key and finish well at the rim, but he also has a lethal jump shot around the wing.

Alongside Kemba Walker, Gilchrist has a terrific opportunity to turn the tide for the Bobcats.
