Rugby Deaths Cloud the Sport

Rugby is one of the greatest sports ever, but it is full of injuries that can end one’s career or even their life.

Injuries range from the neck to the shoulder, the arm to the elbow. Some hurt their wrists, backs, hips, knees, ankles, or other parts of the body.

There is nothing worse than a trauma for a sportsman because it can cause a lot of lost time. When trauma is serious and your life is on the line, I don’t think you will worry about athletics. Spine and neck injuries can cause paralysis, tetraplegia and other horrible traumas. The worst case is death.

 Here are some examples of horrible accidents during rugby matches:


Tongan flanker dies during rugby match


A Tongan rugby player, recently married and the father of two young children, died from a heart attack during a French third division match on Sunday. Feao Latu, 28, collapsed just 15 minutes into the top-of-the-table match at Cahors and was pronounced dead at the hospital, emergency services said.

"It's dreadful,” Perigueux club president Michel Macary said. “We are completely shocked. All the players and all of the rugby family here have lived through a drama today. It's hard to accept.”


Clubs stunned as try-saving tackle takes a life


Tino Amato was racing for the tryline when hit by a tackle that took his life. He was playing on the right wing for his Central Hawkes Bay Rugby Club in their premier-level local clash with neighbouring Otane on Saturday afternoon. The high-speed tackle from the Otane fullback was a try-saver, forcing Amato, who had been heading for the corner, out over the sideline.


Pupils run to raise cash after schoolmate's rugby accident


More than 160 pupils at a top city school are set to take part in a run to raise funds for a charity that helped their schoolmate after he suffered a horrific spinal injury in a rugby accident. The boys at Merchiston Castle School have joined forces to raise money for Hearts & Balls, which supported both the teenager and his devastated family in the wake of the accident.

The school's headmaster, who visits the teenager in hospital once a week, said the teenager's parents had been "destroyed by grief" following the accident. They are now concentrating on the future and their son's recovery


Schoolboy dies after rugby accident


A public school pupil has died after a clash of heads during a rugby match. James Harding, 18, a pupil at Sherborne School in Dorset, died in hospital on Sunday following the accident.  He was hurt while playing against Blundell's School from Tiverton, Devon. School spokesman Richard Gould said

“He had a totally accidental head-to-head collision, while carrying the ball, with a member of the opposing team and sustained a head injury,” said school spokesman Richard Gould.

These are horrible accidents and there are a lot more than shown here. I am not trying to say to forget rugby because it is too dangerous.

No—I am a rugby player myself and I can’t imagine my life without this sport. All I want is you to know how dangerous it is and how many these sportsmen risk. Because sometimes, one tackle is all it takes.
