The Top 10 Worst Practice Facilities in College Football

Alex Callos

When it comes to college football practice facilities, some schools are leaps and bounds ahead of others.

Schools with state of the art practice facilities usually find winning games a little easier to come by. While BCS schools certainly have a distinct advantage when it comes to recruiting, there are some that are lagging behind.

These schools have a lot of catching up to do to reach the same level as many of the others.

Here are the top 10 worst practice facilities in college football, BCS teams included.

10. Duke Blue Devils

Duke is a basketball school and almost certainly always will be. They have been a bottom feeder in the ACC for the past few decades and are showing no signs of coming out of it.

They lag behind in a lot of things, and practice facilities are possibly more important than anything.

As recently as a few years ago, Duke did not have a 100-yard practice field and practiced on a field that was 70 yards.

They have recently completed an indoor practice facility and things may finally be headed in the right direction for the Blue Devils.

9. UAB Blazers

When it comes to desired head coaching jobs, UAB may be the least desirable of any in Conference USA.

One of the reasons for that is poor practice facilities. The Blazers hold some of their practices at Legion Field, where they play their home games, but also have a practice facility where some of the practices are held.

The on-campus practice facility can not even be used if there is a lot of rain because it is grass and not the conventional field turf that many others are.

8. Ohio Bobcats

Like many other teams from non-BCS conferences, the Ohio Bobcats hold their practices on their home field Peden Stadium.

The stadium is tiny compared to many of the other stadiums in college football with a seating capacity of about 24,000.

Ohio has had success in recent years, but if they want to consistently be a contender in the MAC, they will need to upgrade some of their facilities.

7. Colorado Buffaloes

Not many BCS teams are lagging behind in facilities the way the Colorado Buffalo are.

The Buffaloes are well behind the other teams in the Pac-12 and virtually the rest of the BCS schools for that matter.

That could be a huge reason why the team has struggled in recent years. It is difficult to get top notch recruits when the facilities are not up to par.

The Buffaloes have work to do in the coming years.

6. Arkansas State Red Wolves

When it comes to practice facilities for Arkansas St, there really is nothing to speak of.

The Red Wolves practice at their stadium which has a seating capacity of around 31,000.

While it is true that not too many teams in the Sun Belt have state-of-the-art practice facilities, the Red Wolves lag behind most of those teams, despite the success they have had over the past few seasons.

5. Bowling Green Falcons

Bowling Green had a few solid years when Urban Meyer was in town and did so despite not having any big time practice facilities.

The Falcons practice at Doyt Perry Stadium where the team plays their home games. The capacity here is just under 24,000, which is 5,000 less people than it was 10 years ago.

Doyt Perry Stadium has the smallest seating capacity of any stadium in the MAC and the other facilities on campus are also lacking.

4. Northwestern Wildcats

While Northwestern has lagged behind in years past, it looks like they are on solid ground with plans for a new practice facility now in the works.

The Wildcats have been way behind their Big Ten counterparts in recent years, and these upgrades look to be just what the doctor ordered.

With these new plans, Northwestern will likely not find themselves on a list like this in the years to come.

3. Marshall Thundering Herd

Marshall has produced some talented players over the years, but their football facilities have certainly lagged behind.

There have recently been plans to integrate an indoor practice facility that would certainly help Marshall get on the same page as many of the premier teams in Conference USA and across the country.

If that happens, they will be much more of a force in the college football landscape like they were at one time.

2. Buffalo Bulls

Another of the smaller stadiums in the country, UB Stadium seats less than 30,000 people.

Buffalo is one of the newer teams to Division 1 college football, and has struggled mightily since joining the FBS level.

They showed some improvements last year and have recently seen some renovations to their practice facilities, but still have a long way to go to be at the same level of most of the other FBS schools.

1. UCLA Bruins

For a Pac-12 school located in one of the biggest cities in the United States, UCLA leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to facilities.

The Bruins play their home games at the Rose Bowl, but that is 30 minutes away from campus.

They have a sub par practice field, and with the amount of resources a school like UCLA should have, more is expected from a large school like this.

If that happens, there may be more success on the football field.
