Charlie Adam: Could the Liverpool Midfielder's Season Be Over?

Craig Davies

Premature reports coming out of Anfield have refused to rule out Charlie Adam taking to the field again this season, after sustaining a lateral ligament injury in the defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

The ex-Blackpool star has so far struggled to make the desired impact, with the Merseysiders stuttering league form being complemented with a Carling Cup win and a run to the FA Cup semifinal.

However, Kenny Dalglish says the extent of the injury is still not known and that the midfielder, currently on crutches, will be assessed again:

We know Charlie has strained knee ligaments but we still don't know how long he will be out. He hasn't had an operation and as it stands he's not having one. It's only been a week since he did it. He needs to rest it for another 10 days or so and then he will be reassessed. We'll see how he is then and we'll be in a better position to know when he will be back playing. We haven't ruled him out for the rest of the season. We're just waiting to see how he progresses.

Troubles

The club's injury troubles have been well documented, with the man at the helm suggesting they could be to blame for the recent defeats at QPR and at home to Wigan.

Craig Bellamy, Martin Kelly, Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson are currently sidelined, which saw 17-year-old Raheem Sterling make a long-awaited debut at the weekend.

Hopes of a lofty finish in this season's Premier League are long gone, but it is imperative that the club build some momentum ahead of the Merseyside derby semifinal at Wembley next month.

That process begins at St James' Park on Sunday, where an away win would breathe some much-needed confidence back into an underperforming side.

However, are fans believing this could happen?

Or pinning hopes on a domestic cup double to salvaging some pride?
