Top 10 Unsung Heroes in the Premier League This Season

Sam Tighe

The English Premier League is full of stars.

You always hear about Wayne Rooney, David Silva and Luis Suarez. They're match-winners and they take the headlines.

What about the players who quietly go about their business, making their team a success, and never receive the attention they quite possibly deserve?

This article reveals 10 of the most efficient players in the Premier League who take almost no credit for their endeavours.

Michael Carrick

We'll start with perhaps the most unsung hero of them all—Michael Carrick.

He's been absolutely brilliant this season, bringing solidity to Manchester United's midfield that has looked ropey without him at times.

Much to the irritation of many Manchester United fans, most still claim that Carrick is the weak leak in Sir Alex Ferguson's team despite his much-improved displays this season.

Alejandro Faurlin

Playing in the midfield of a struggling Queens Park Rangers side is not easy but Alejandro Faurlin certainly pulls his weight.

Once at the centre of a transfer-related maelstrom, he is now quietly effective in the QPR side.

He averages an 81 percent pass completion rate and makes a league-high 4.5 tackles per game.

Stephen Warnock

Stephen Warnock may be a surprise choice but he's come a long way since being frozen out of the Aston Villa side by Gerard Houllier for no apparent reason.

While Villa's defence under Alex McLeish has been far from assured, Warnock is back to his committed best.

This is underlined by that incredible goal-line clearance against Arsenal's Robin van Persie this weekend. For those of you who don't watch Villa much, he does that stuff on a regular basis.

Danny Murphy

He's still ticking over after all this time.

Averaging 62 passes per game, it is clear that 35-year-old Danny Murphy still runs the game in Fulham's formation.

He remains a calm and controlling presence in the centre of the park and Martin Jol's side struggle without him.

It's easy to forget just how influential he can still be.

James Morrison

James Morrison is a key cog in West Brom's midfield.

He works hard, displays the ultimate versatility and represents a true threat from outside the box.

Roy Hodgson has built a team that works hard for each other and Morrison is no exception. He's great to watch going forward but his defensive contribution is often forgotten.

Joe Allen

Joe Allen is the playmaker in Swansea.

Gylfi Sigurdsson may score the goals and take the headlines, but it's the little Welshman that makes that midfield tick.

He's completed 90 percent of 1,617 passes so far this season whilst playing in a free-flowing, attacking formation.

Brendan Rodgers' philosophy has allowed Allen to come to the fore and really dictate his team's tempo and play.

Nathan Dyer

Nathan Dyer is fast becoming one of the most potent attacking forces in the Premier League.

He combines well with Angel Rangel to terrorise top-tier left-backs, beating them repeatedly with his pace and guile.

He's a hard worker and has simply flourished under Brendan Rodgers' system, just like Joe Allen.

Stiliyan Petrov

Stiliyan Petrov had a rough beginning to his Premier League career.

Having been converted into a defensive midfielder, he's showing true class.

A league-high 3.6 interceptions per game sees him top the charts, above the likes of Scott Parker and Alex Song.

Aston Villa haven't had a good season but Stiliyan Petrov has been steady and consistent yet again.

Alex Song

Speaking of Alex Song...

The Arsenal midfielder has shown some serious improvements in his game over the course of the season, becoming much more than an interceptor.

He's got eight assists in the league so far as his passing has started to open up defences.

He played a sublime pass to Theo Walcott during Arsenal's demolition of North London rivals Tottenham and continues to become more ambitious and confident on the ball.

Danny Graham

Danny Graham is the third Swansea player to make this list. Are they really all unsung heroes?

About 50 percent of English Premier League fans can't even name 11 Swansea players, just about mustering the names Michel Vorm and Scott Sinclair from somewhere.

Graham has bagged 12 goals in 24 starts this season across all competitions and looks like he's settled in well.

He's unselfish and helps his team and has a true strikers' instinct.
