Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Top 10 Stories of the Week

Allan Jiang

With the January transfer deadline day approaching, Premier League transfer rumours are overloading.

If you're an Arsenal supporter, rather than meticulously go through various websites searching for Arsenal transfer rumours, I've done it for you.

This article will examine the top 10 Arsenal transfer rumours of the week.

Andrey Arshavin

According to John Cross at Mirror Football, Arsenal outcast Andrey Arshavin will be sold to Lazio for £6 million.

This season, Arshavin has been impotent when he's played.

I do not understand why Arsène Wenger doesn't play Arshavin centrally, because the Russian was world class for a period of time as an attacking midfielder.

Against Manchester United, Arshavin was booed after he was subbed on for the promising Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

To make matters worse, Arshavin was at fault when he failed to deal with Antonio Valencia, which led to Manchester United's winning goal.

To be fair to Arshavin, at least he was trying to defend, as opposed to not defending at all.

I'm skeptical as to why Cross chose Lazio because they have Hernanes, who is a younger and better player than Arshavin, playing in the attacking midfield role.

There's also the fact that Wenger has stated that Arshavin will not be sold this month.

José Callejón

According to Emirates247.com, Arsenal are planning to sign Real Madrid super sub José Callejón.

Callejón is a prototypical José Mourinho player: hard working, loyal and selfless.

So there is no way the Portuguese manager will let Callejón leave.

In five starts this season, Callejón has scored six goals.

Every time he has come on as a substitute, he's been tidy in possession—completing 88 percent of his passes, and has been a bright spark.

Callejón is living the dream because he has always wanted to play for Real Madrid, and he's in great form, so it makes no sense for him to leave.

Arsenal could submit £20 million for Callejón (which they won't), and Mourinho would block the transfer because Callejón is one of his favourite players.

Burak Yılmaz

According to Arthur Virgo at Goal.com, Trabzonspor forward Burak Yılmaz is open to the possibility of joining Arsenal.

This season, Yılmaz has scored 23 goals in 19 Süper Lig games. However, he went goalless in 270 UEFA Champions League minutes.

The main reason why this transfer won't happen is Arsenal play one centre forward—Robin van Persie, who is the third best forward in the world right now.

Unless Yılmaz is fine with warming the benches and waiting for van Persie to break down, it's not a wise career move for the Turk.

He may want to play for a big club, but it would be safer to join a mid-table club in a top league that is willing to make him the main man.

Ravel Morrison

According to Sami Mokbel at the Daily Mail, Arsène Wenger is weighing whether to bid for Manchester United's troubled starlet Ravel Morrison.

Morrison and his agent are currently strong-arming Manchester United into an improved contract.

It's pure greed because Morrison hasn't even made his Premier League debut yet.

What happens if he makes it big? He'll probably demand to be the highest paid player in the world.

Then, you factor in his run-in with the law, and one has to ask whether it's worth the risk.

Jermaine Pennant wasn't, so Morrison probably isn't.

Lucas Barrios

According to Just Arsenal News, Arsenal will inquire about the availability of Borussia Dortmund forward Lucas Barrios.

Barrios hasn't even scored a Bundesliga goal this season and has been the second choice to Robert Lewandowski.

Like Dortmund, Arsenal only play with one centre forward, and if Barrios can't beat out Lewandowski for a starting position, he has no chance beating out Robin van Persie.

What Barrios wants is to be a permanent starter, and Arsenal will not offer him that.

Jan Vertonghen

According to the Metro, Ajax are mulling over whether to sell Jan Vertonghen as he may not extend his contract, which ends in 2013.

Arsenal must bid for Vertonghen because not only is he a solid centre-back, but he's also a competent left-back and can play as a defensive midfielder.

Arsène Wenger should also keep tabs on another Ajax utility player in Vurnon Anita, who has played okay at left-back, even though he's a natural midfielder.

Christian Eriksen is Ajax's goldmine, so it's more likely that you'll get him transferred into your football manager team than Wenger bidding for the Danish prodigy.

Clint Dempsey

According to Massimo Marioni at The Metro, Clint Dempsey's UEFA Champions League admission could see him move to Arsenal.

Of course, this is assuming Arsenal qualify for the Champions League.

That being said, Dempsey is essentially saying: 'I want to play for a bigger club than Fulham.'

Arsenal would be a bigger club than Fulham, and they'd welcome his goal scoring prowess.

Against Newcastle United, when he played behind Bobby Zamora, Dempsey was scintillating.

Ideally, you'd want to play Dempsey as an attacking midfielder, even though he has played 15 games as a left winger this season.

Chris Samba

According to Bill Mann at The Week, Arsenal are set to sign a disillusioned Blackburn Rovers centre-back Chris Samba.

Samba has handed in a transfer request and has given Rovers an ominous warning

When a couple don't get on they get a divorce—and that's what me and Blackburn have to do.

Blackburn need players who are 100 per cent for the club—and I'm not.

I'm at the end of the road here. I'm not going to change so, for their good and mine, they must sell me now.

Per Mertesacker has been hopeless, and Samba will be a better centre-back.

Brek Shea

Brek Shea told Goal.com that Arsenal have not discussed plans about bringing him back to the London club.

I'm shocked.

Juventus thought Thierry Henry was overrated.

Patrick Vieira was just another player to A.C. Milan.

Dennis Bergkamp was a misfit at Inter Milan

Now, Shea is unlikely to replicate what Henry, Vieira and Bergkamp achieved, but prior to Arsenal, the aforementioned three weren't rated.

Shea has been class for Dallas and Arsenal management must have seen a red flag in the American.

A mobile and skillful 6'3" winger is what I see.

This could be a big mistake from Arsenal.

Arsène Wenger

According to the Daily Mail, Arsène Wenger is shortlisted to replace Real Madrid manager José Mourinho.

Now, why would Real Madrid hire Wenger who hasn't won a trophy in seven years?

Piers Morgan voiced what many Arsenal supporters were thinking when Wenger subbed off Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, which at the time seemed daft as a brush.

However, Robin van Persie later revealed that Oxlade-Chamberlain had a calf injury

Wenger will stay on at Arsenal until something catastrophic happens, like a team revolt or a bottom-half Premier League finish.

Even though Arsenal is in shambles, finishing fourth is still a realistic possibility.
