Aaron Rodgers might not be the only veteran the New York Jets move on from this offseason.
After Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported Sunday that New York told Rodgers it was parting ways with him this offseason, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said "don't be surprised" if the Jets also split with wide receiver Davante Adams.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz added that Adams "was primarily there because of Rodgers" and "may want out as well" since his contract will likely need to be adjusted if he did remain with the AFC East team.
The idea that New York will move on from Adams is nothing new.
Rapoport reported Thursday that new Jets general manager Darren Mougey and new head coach Aaron Glenn hadn't yet been in contact with the veteran receiver. What's more, he explained the team would likely have to "massage the cap number" by automatically converting it if Adams did stay.
That is because "they are not going to carry a $36-million cap number for a 30-something receiver."
Adams is set to make $35.6 million in base salary in 2025 and again in 2026, which is a significant amount of money for a 32-year-old receiver who did not inspire the turnaround during the 2024 season the front office was surely hoping for when it acquired him via trade from the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2024 campaign.
Adams likely isn't looking for any type of rebuild at this point of his career either, and the Jets could be looking at something of a short-term reshuffling with a new regime taking over for the 2025 season.
That also means another team could have the opportunity to add one of the best receivers of his generation this offseason.
Adams is a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro selection with six seasons of more than 1,000 receiving yards on his resume. He also led the league with 18 touchdown catches in 2020 and 14 touchdown catches in 2022 when he was with the Green Bay Packers and then the Raiders.
He was still productive in 2024 with 1,063 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches and could reshape the receiver room for a contender this offseason.
