Whether Travis Kelce returns for the 2025 NFL season could depend on the results of Super Bowl LIX, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport reported Saturday that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end "still hasn't made up his mind" about playing a 13th NFL season.
"Sources informed of his thinking say Kelce's decision could hinge on the results of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles," Rapoport wrote.
Rapoport continued:
A win would make the Chiefs the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, allowing Kelce to walk off into the sunset in a way almost no one gets to do. A loss could fuel him to return for the 2025 season, but it also could show him it's time.
The Chiefs and Eagles kick off in New Orleans on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
After serving as Mahomes' top target in each of the team's last two Super Bowl wins— Kelce recorded 81 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles, and added 93 yards against the San Francisco 49ers— the veteran tight end is likely to receive fewer targets in his third consecutive championship game.
That's thanks in large part to the emergence of rookie wideout Xavier Worthy, who has split the lion's share of targets from Patrick Mahomes through two playoff games.
In part because of Worthy's arrival in the NFL, Kelce finished the regular season with 823 receiving yards, the lowest total he's ever recorded in a full pro season.
ESPN reported last summer that Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce had signed a three-year deal worth more than $100 million for their New Heights podcast. That budding media career alongside his decreased role in the Chiefs' offense could influence any retirement considerations by Kelce.
Kelce has denied the 2024 campaign will be his final NFL season recently as the week leading up to the Super Bowl, saying Monday he had "thought about" retirement but believed he could still play going forward, per NFL.com's Kevin Patra.
"It's moments like these, weeks like these, the month that we just had in the playoffs that make me feel like I could play this game forever. I think I still got a lot of football left in me," Kelce said Monday, per Patra.
Kelce continued: "I know I've been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That's always been the goal, knowing that football only lasts for so long. You've got to find a way to get into another career, another profession. I've been doing that in my offseasons.
"But for the most part, I'm planning on being a Kansas City Chief and playing football."
That "for the most part" left open the possibility, confirmed by Rapoport, that Kelce is considering changing his answer before next season.
Kelce is currently signed through 2025 for a base salary of $4.5 million, per Spotrac. Because the Chiefs owe him a $11.5 million roster bonus if he is still on the roster as of March 14, his decision could be coming within the next five weeks.
