The Royal Rumble matches usually illustrate how the right theme song could make or break a star in pro wrestling.
For the last three years, fans couldn't recognize the entrance music of several notable Superstars during the iconic event. This topic has been a part of the ongoing discussion surrounding new themes.
WWE prioritizes presentation more than any other wrestling company. The company's high production value has always separated it from the rest of the pack in a crowded market.
So, it's surprising that the industry juggernaut hasn't updated its music department in response to prevalent criticism of many theme songs made by Def Rebel. The New York-based producer took on the hefty task of creating the roster's entrance music after CFO$ left their position as executive producers in 2020.
To be fair, it would've been hard for anyone to replace the duo of John Paul Alicastro and Michael Conrad Lauri because CFO$ became wildly popular due to their work on NXT. However, Def Rebel curated some of the most generic and forgettable themes in the following years.
Yes, the current executive producer has created gems such as Iyo Sky's "Tokyo Shock," Roman Reigns' much-needed upgrade in "Head of the Table," and Seth Rollins' "The Vision." Still, fans haven't exactly responded well to some of his other output, to say the least.
In fact, reactions to his music became the topic of online discourse and several YouTube videos. According to a recent Fightful Select report (h/t Ryan Droste of The Takedown), viewers aren't the only ones unhappy with some of his creations.
Apparently, many superstars never interacted with Def Rebel or had any input on their music. Fightful Select reported "that several have expressed unhappiness with the quality of theme songs and have made attempts to get their previous themes back."
Accordingly, these five stars need new entrance music as soon as possible. Feel free to list your picks in the comments section.
Shayna Baszler
Shayna Baszler's current theme song, "Limb by Limb," is one of the worst offenders.
It's just about impossible not to compare most of our entries here to their predecessors made by CFO$, but "Loyalty is Everything" was so much better. It provided the perfect soundtrack for her dominant run as the two-time NXT women's champion.
However, her current theme doesn't fit her at all. It sounds like the vanilla stock music found in the creation suite on WWE 2K24 that you could add to an arbitrary create-a-wrestler.
To that end, it doesn't make Baszler stand out; it's not memorable or catchy at all. WWE needs to go back to the drawing board and create something that accentuates The Queen of Spades' character.
Andrade
Andrade's theme song "Conquistar" isn't terrible; it's just bland.
The worst thing we can say about it is that it sounds too similar to most of Def Rebel's productions. On the contrary, "Making a Difference" was distinct and easy to identify.
A common gripe about many new themes is that they explicitly named the superstar it's supposed to represent in the opening seconds. It's so derivative, but it also indicates that the music isn't evocative enough to become synonymous with the wrestlers.
When someone hears the glass shatter, they immediately think about Stone Cold Steve Austin. Everyone immediately recognizes the first few notes of John Cena's theme when he enters an arena.
This is also why Charlotte Flair's "All Hail the Queen" works. Def Rebel didn't have to add her name to the beginning because the song's few lyrics draw attention to her, and it's a natural update to her old theme.
"Conquistar" could be any Mexican wrestler's theme song. Nothing about it specifically speaks to who Andrade is.
New Catch Republic
"Walk of Life" is actually well-produced for the most part, but the tacked-on refrain of "New Catch Republic!" makes it sound silly.
It's a shame because it was clearly influenced by Jack White's "Love is Blindness," which British Strong Style used as their entrance music in indie promotions like Progress Wrestling. So, there was an evident attempt to make something unique to Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate's history as a tag team.
However, the audio clip of the duo shouting "New Catch Republic" in unison is just too cheesy, and it plays more than once for some reason. It quickly reminds most fans of what they don't like about other contemporary theme songs Def Rebel produced.
Honestly, some slight changes could make this a solid theme song for the British tag team, but we also wouldn't be opposed to something new when Bate returns.
Sheamus
WWE doesn't even need to make new entrance music for Sheamus. We just want his old theme back.
We're not alone because The Celtic Warrior has also been campaigning for "Written in My Face" to return for years. The 47-year-old even tweeted a picture of a fan holding a sign that shared this sentiment on Jan. 31, the day before the Royal Rumble.
Fans may remember when he briefly dusted it off and used it as his theme song when he returned in April 2024, but he couldn't keep it. The popular song produced by wrestling legend, Jim Johnston, has inspired many memes and inside jokes online.
Sheamus' current theme, "10 Beats Of The Bodhrán," pales in comparison. It's as if someone typed "Irish wrestler" into an AI music generator, and it spits out the most pedestrian song possible. Bring back lobster head.
Bayley
Bayley has been in search of another great theme song since she ditched the inflatable Bayley Buddies in 2019.
Of course, "Turn It Up" wouldn't have fit her heel persona, but "Deliverance" never quite caught on, either. So much so that many fans were excited about the prospect of new entrance music when she became a sympathetic character in her feud with Iyo Sky and Damage CTRL.
Bayley had outgrown the Hugger gimmick and her NXT theme, so this was the perfect opportunity to start fresh at WrestleMania 40. She and her former stablemate delivered one of the best matches from the two-night event, but "Role Model" didn't quite hit the mark.
She even joked about the reception to the song at a recent Fanatics Live event, leaving many to assume she's not fond of it, either. The first WWE women's grand slam champion deserves something that fits her current personality and references her history with the company.
WWE hasn't addressed the long-term clearance needed to allow Superstars to use licensed music yet, but the right song would elevate Bayley's presentation.
