Backstage WWE and AEW Rumors: Latest on Nikki Bella, Jordynne Grace, and More

Erik Beaston

In the aftermath of the Royal Rumble, the pro wrestling rumor mill is working overtime, producing stories and headline-grabbing reports about top stars from across the industry, including the women's divisions of WWE and All Elite Wrestling.

The return of Nikki Bella in the women's Rumble match, the first appearance of Jordynne Grace as a WWE Superstar, an update on Jade Cargill's WrestleMania 41 status, and new associates for Mercedes Moné in AEW make up this week's crop of insider reports.

Full-Time Return for Nikki Bella?

Nikki Bella returned to WWE Saturday night, entering at No. 30 in the women's Rumble match and being the third-last Superstar eliminated.

In the wake of her return, WrestleVotes reported on Backstage Pass Q&A with Bill Apter that she did "significant" numbers in merchandise sales and the company was happy with the execution of her comeback.

A full-time return would be a possibility if she wanted it.

That's not particularly surprising to hear. Bella has a strong fanbase dating back to her last run with the company and is recognizable beyond the confines of WWE, including as a cast member of Peacock hit TV show The Traitors.

She was a driving force behind mobilizing the social media movement, #GiveDivasAChance, which first indicated to higher-ups in WWE that there was a desire to see women treated better and more fairly when it came to wrestling in the promotion.

A lot of built-up equity and fandom transcends the business, so the merchandise numbers and the company's openness to have Bella back for a full-time run if she wants it only makes business sense if nothing else.

Where Bella fits at a time when the women's roster is brimming with talent to the point that it's difficult to find a place for everyone on the show, is the real question.

Still, with a star of that magnitude, WWE would find something of substance for her to do if she indicated that was what she wanted.

Jordynne Grace Update

Jordynne Grace made her first appearance as a WWE Superstar at the Royal Rumble, and Fightful Select's Sean Ross Sapp reported some details of her new deal with the promotion.

The 28-year-old has inked a five-year deal through 2029. While the original plan was for her to be part of NXT, she did sign a main roster deal, ensuring any stint with the silver and black brand is short.

One of the best wrestlers in the world, as evidenced by her last run as TNA Knockouts champion, Grace is a significant hire for WWE and should be a key player in the company's plans for the women's division for the foreseeable future.

A powerhouse who is also deceptively fast and can chain wrestle if and when it's needed, she is as close to the total package as possible from an in-ring perspective.

How Grace translates from a character standpoint to the WWE Universe will be the question and one that the company likely won't wait long to begin answering.

Jade Cargill Return Timeline

Johnson also reported Jade Cargill is expected back on WWE television before WrestleMania 41 (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats).

The Storm has been out of action since just before Survivor Series in late-November following a backstage attack that left her unconscious on the hood of a car and the assailant unknown.

Since then, Naomi has assumed her spot in the Women's Tag Team Championship tandem with Bianca Belair, creating questions as to whether she had anything to do with her friend's misfortune.

Jon Alba of The Takedown on SI.com reported Cargill is actively working to get cleared to compete in time for The Showcase of the Immortals but there was no further information about what injury she is rehabbing.

Backup for Mercedes Moné

Mercedes Moné has dominated the women's division in AEW since debuting with the company last March and appears to be gaining some on-screen backup.

Sapp wrote: "The Renegade Sisters were backstage at AEW Dynamite last week. They've been long discussed for a potential integration with Mercedes Moné."

The CEO previously had support from Kamille, but that on-screen pairing abruptly ended during Moné's rivalry with Kris Statlander.

Robin and Charlotte Renegade have appeared on and off of AEW television for years, including a stint in Ring of Honor, where they served as rivals of women's champion Athena and her minion, Billie Starkz.

The Renegade Twins are a promising young tandem and adding them to Moné's act will only increase their visibility and allow them to learn from a competitor who has succeeded and excelled at every level of competition in professional wrestling today.

It also gives Moné a pair of heaters who can further enhance a heel act that finally feels like it is gaining traction with fans after a rough first eight months or so in the promotion.
