The 2025 recruiting cycle is coming to an unofficial close with the traditional February national signing day.
Ever since the NCAA opened a December window in 2017, a strong majority of prospects have signed their national letter of intent well before the first Wednesday in February. However, a few standout players always (and understandably) seem to take a little more time.
Prospective college athletes are not required to sign on Wednesday, but most of the remaining players will do that.
As a result, a few storylines still linger.
We're getting you ready for signing day, which is set to feature the last available top-50 prospect making his decision official.
Ty Haywood's Decision Starts the Week
By the time you're reading this, Ty Haywood may have already announced his decision.
A 4-star offensive tackle rated as the No. 39 player in the class, he committed to Alabama in July 2024. Haywood chose not to sign in December, though, and backed off his Bama pledge in mid-January.
Rumors had already linked him to Michigan at that point, and the connection is only gaining momentum.
Haywood, who made an official trip to Ann Arbor within a week of that announcement, is also considering Florida State—which he visited last summer—and Texas Tech. He'll reveal this choice sometime on Monday.
Eyes on Zahir Mathis
There's been no shortage of activity for Zahir Mathis, a former Ohio State pledge who decommitted in mid-November.
Mathis, a 4-star edge-rusher, officially visited both Florida State and Maryland in January. He was scheduled to see UCLA but couldn't make the trip because of the wildfires, and a plan to check out Michigan fell through. Virginia Tech has been in contact, and Ohio State remains in play.
Busy month, I'd say.
Mathis is expected to announce his choice on Wednesday when the signing period opens. Maryland received the last visit from him, but Mathis' recruitment clearly will be going down to the wire.
Flip Watch for 4-Star
The reality of recruiting is verbal pledges are not binding.
If a prospect is committed to a school before the early window but doesn't sign in December, he immediately becomes a player of interest. Such is the case for a quartet of remaining blue-chip talents.
Onis Konanbanny is unofficially tied to Tennessee, but rival Florida is lurking for the 4-star cornerback.
This possibility has been brewing since Konanbanny—who committed to the Vols back in August—took an official visit to Gainesville in late November. He also returned to Florida for a shadow in January but didn't make a stop in Knoxville during the month.
Given the timeline of these events, history says there's a major chance Konanbanny flips into the Gators' class.
(Nearly) Final Movement in Team Rankings
All things considered, the difference between sixth and seventh in the final rankings is pretty immaterial.
Nevertheless, one looks a little bit better!
Auburn currently sits at No. 6, but adding Haywood would send Michigan to that position. If he doesn't pick U-M, Florida could edge beyond the Wolverines if Konanbanny flips from Tennessee.
Further down the rankings, Florida State is potentially the biggest winner of signing day. The dream scenario—landing both Haywood and Mathis—would catapult the Seminoles from 19th to 13th in this cycle. While I wouldn't count on that happening, the possibility is there.
Other commitments from available 3-stars may slightly alter some rankings, but only Haywood, Mathis and Konanbanny can noticeably adjust the Top 20 or so.
With one exception.
Race Intensifies for J'Vari Flowers
Late in January, cornerback J'Vari Flowers announced he would be reclassifying from the 2026 cycle into 2025.
Forget the marathon, get ready for a sprint.
"I'm probably going to make a commitment in March or April," he told 247Sports. "Where I'm going to be developed the best, get on the field early, and be able to run track and play football."
Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Miami—which is the hometown team—are the major players in his recruitment.
Upon reclassifying, Flowers slotted into the 2025 class as the No. 12 corner and No. 91 overall prospect.
