5 Burning Questions for the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble Matches

Philip Lindsey

This Saturday, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN will host WWE Royal Rumble, the first stop on the road to WrestleMania 41.

At the event, 30 men and women will compete for the chance of a lifetime in their respective renditions of the company's iconic stipulation match. The first premium live event of the year will likely come with its share of surprises and advance the top storylines ahead of The Showcase of the Immortals.

On the men's side, John Cena looks to kick off his farewell tour with one last hurrah and earn the chance to break Ric Flair's record for the most world title wins. Although he's listed as a favorite to win on BetOnline, the 47-year-old must survive a battle royal loaded with this era's hottest superstars.

On the contrary, the outcome of the women's Royal Rumble is wide open because WWE hasn't dedicated as much time to creating stories for its most recognizable competitors. It's truly anyone's match to win, which makes us wonder if a surprise return could become the winner like Ronda Rousey in 2022.

All this suspense makes it hard not to be excited about this year's show. In the meantime, let's try to answer these five burning questions for the 2025 men's and women's Royal Rumble match.

Will Jade Cargill Return and Give Us Any Clues About Who Attacked Her?

WWE has only revealed 10 participants for the women's Royal Rumble match.

Straight away, Jade Cargill has to be one of the most anticipated surprise returns ahead of the event thanks to the recent whodunit brewing on SmackDown. The former women's tag team champion has been out of action since the Nov. 22, 2024 episode when she was found unconscious on the hood of a car in the parking garage.

This led to reports that Cargill was written off television before Survivor Series: WarGames to plant the seeds for a future storyline. That likely means she will enter the Rumble, single out the culprit who put her on the shelf for two months, or wrongfully assume it was Naomi.

That is the biggest potential payoff to her absence and partnership with Bianca Belair. It could set the table for a dream match between the two at WrestleMania 41, which would be a nice callback to their staredown from last year's match.

Can Seth Rollins Crush Roman Reigns and CM Punk's Hopes to Win?

Seth Rollins opened the latest episode of Raw and declared his intention to win this year's star-studded men's Royal Rumble match.

This means he will cross paths with many friends and bitter rivals including Roman Reigns and CM Punk. In the process, The Visionary reignited a potential feud from last year's build with the current WWE world heavyweight champion, Gunther.

Although the two have circled each other before, there's a good chance they could finally face each other on The Grandest Stage of Them All this year. In fact, BetOnline has given Rollins the second-best odds to win on Saturday night following Cena.

If he does upset the likes of Reigns and Punk, it would be a great follow-up to his story arc ahead of Survivor Series: WarGames and his loss to The Second City Saint in the main event of the premiere of Raw on Netflix.

In one fell swoop, he would ensure they both don't have a route to WrestleMania 41 and secure an opportunity to cement himself as Raw's workhorse champion or finally defeat Cody Rhodes.

Will Becky Lynch Be a Surprise Entrant in the Women's Royal Rumble Match?

Last week, Charlotte Flair officially announced that she will enter the women's Royal Rumble match, but what about her fellow horsewoman?

Becky Lynch hasn't appeared on WWE programming since her Steel Cage match against Liv Morgan from the May 27, 2024 episode of Raw. Apparently, her contract expired over the summer, and the former women's world champion became the industry's most coveted female free agent.

However, she reportedly opted to take some time off and spend it with her family. At the beginning of the year, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported that she signed a new deal and would factor into plans for WrestleMania 41.

When she didn't return during WWE's debut on Netflix, many fans predicted she would be a surprise entrant in the Rumble. This could be the year she fulfills her dream of becoming the first woman to be a two-time winner at the event.

How Will the Other Participants React to Roman Reigns?

The most understated storyline in this year's men's Royal Rumble match is Roman Reigns' attempt to regain his throne.

It's surreal to consider that this will be The Tribal Chief's first Rumble appearance since 2020. Obviously, a lot has changed since then, but the Samoan star made a lot of enemies during his historic 1,316-day reign and didn't do much to make amends.

One would have to imagine everyone he terrorized and anyone who felt he robbed the rest of the locker room of equal opportunities will attempt to eliminate him and stop him from regaining power. As stated earlier, this sets up a must-see encounter with Rollins, but it also gives Drew McIntyre the chance to avenge his loss at Clash at the Castle in 2022.

After all, Solo won't be there to help him this time because it's a free-for-all, but that also begs the question: How will the original members of The Bloodline react to him now? Sami Zayn and The Usos helped him defeat the new iteration of the stable at Survivor Series: WarGames, but there's still tension between them.

When Reigns enters the men's Royal Rumble match this weekend, he will have to face the consequences of his actions as champion. It may not be the walk in the park he's expecting.

Can CM Punk Win His First Royal Rumble Match?

This year's men's Royal Rumble match marks CM Punk's second attempt since his unfathomable WWE return in 2023 to pursue his longtime dream.

It hasn't been an easy road back to this event for the polarizing superstar, but he can finally pursue the goal he came back to WWE to achieve again. Indeed, this could be the year when the Chicago native wins his first Rumble match and headlines WrestleMania for the first time in his career.

This is definitely one of the most intriguing possibilities, but does Punk really need this win to attain a title match at The Show of Shows? Paul Heyman still owes him a favor after he agreed to help The Bloodline at Survivor Series: WarGames, and that will surely come into play soon.

Even more, who's to say his upcoming Mania opponent will be a reigning champion? Sure, the 46-year-old has been calling out Gunther for months, and the go-home episode of Raw heavily implied he could challenge Cody Rhodes.

However, that seemed like a red herring meant to build excitement for Punk's potential win. With The Rock out of the equation for now, don't be surprised if a long-awaited feud with Roman Reigns is WWE's ace in the hole.

That is a bonafide WrestleMania main event with years of history to rely on and an advantageous replacement for the dream match many fans wanted. Yes, Reigns vs. Rollins is also an excellent option, but our money is on a showdown 10 years in the making.
