Rory McIlroy sure knows how to make a first impression on the 2025 PGA Tour season.
The four-time major champion made his season debut Thursday during the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the Monterey Peninsula in northern California and fired a six-under 66 at the Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
While he notched four birdies, three of which came on his final four holes, and didn't tally a single bogey, the highlight came on the par-three 15th when he slam dunked a hole-in-one. The shot flew straight into the cup without hitting the green at all, which gave him plenty of momentum the rest of the round considering he started on the back nine and was playing just his sixth hole.
The 66 put him just one stroke off the lead in the unique tournament that features two different courses throughout the event.
Social media had plenty of reaction to McIlroy's round:
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is something of an unusual tournament on the PGA Tour schedule.
Todd Kelly of Golfweek broke down the format, noting it features 80 professional golfers and 80 amateurs that include celebrities and former athletes. Each amateur is paired with a professional, and the pairings play one round at Pebble Beach Golf Links and another at Spyglass Hill Golf Course during the opening two days.
A two-person team is declared the winner after Friday's round, and the professionals who make the cut then advance to the weekend to compete for the individual trophy during two rounds at Pebble Beach.
Condoleezza Rice, Pau Gasol, Larry Fitzgerald, Mia Hamm, Steve Young and Alex Smith are among the celebrities who played this year.
As for McIlroy, this was his first round on the PGA Tour since September's Tour Championship.
He is looking for his first major championship since 2014 this season after coming so close in recent years. He finished in second place in each of the last two U.S. Opens and finished in the top 10 of all four majors in 2022.
If Thursday was any indication, he will be threatening the top of those leaderboards once again this year.
