NBA, WNBA Will Change Shape of Shot Clock; New Design to Debut at NBA All-Star Game

The NBA and WNBA shot clocks are getting a makeover that will debut at the 2025 NBA All-Star Game.

Per Tom Friend of the Sports Business Journal, the league will use a new LED-infused shot clock that will be used for the first time at the All-Star Game on Feb. 16 before being implemented throughout the league starting with the 2025-26 season.

The new clock will have a circle shape with the game clock and shot clock embedded inside.

Friend noted the league approached Tissot about 18 months ago to "ideate an IP-based shot clock" that led to the new design.

The WNBA will incorporate the new shot clocks starting with the 2026 season. Aside from the circular design, there won't be many significant changes. Red numbers will still be used to indicate the end of each quarter and amber will be used for expiration of the shot clock.

According to Friend, there will be a green-shaded countdown clock for coaches challenges. The clocks will also have the ability to "to spruce up the shot clocks with any other color" on special occasions.

"We can play with the color," Tissot CEO Sylvain Dolla told Friend "If we are in a [arena] where the team plays and their team color is red, we can be red. If it's yellow, we can put it yellow. So we can play with color for the esthetics in the [building]."

The new shot clock was unveiled on Thursday in Paris where the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs will play the first of a two-game series at Accor Arena.

Thursday's announcement was part of a new, expanded partnership between the NBA, WNBA, G League and Tissot.

Tissot has been the official timekeeper of the NBA, WNBA and G League since the 2016-17 season.
