The New Orleans Saints appear to be Mike McCarthy's only potential head coaching landing spot at this point after the Chicago Bears agreed to terms with ex-Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Monday.
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported the latest on the Scoop City podcast (2:45 mark):
"Yeah, I think this would be it for Mike McCarthy," Russini reported when co-host and ex-NFL quarterback Chase Daniel asked if New Orleans would be the "only landing spot" left for the ex-Dallas Cowboys head coach.
"I don't get the sense that the [Jacksonville Jaguars] or [New York Jets] are going to be bringing him in for an interview, so we'll see if this is going to be the right fit and the right opportunity for him and then."
Five NFL teams have head coaching openings: the Saints, Jaguars, Jets, Dallas Cowboys and the Las Vegas Raiders.
McCarthy is looking for a new gig after the Cowboys let his five-year contract expire on Jan. 14 without an extension. The Bears previously announced last Wednesday that McCarthy interviewed with the team.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday (before the Johnson news) that McCarthy was a "legitimate candidate" in both Chicago and New Orleans.
The Saints are also working to set up an in-person interview with McCarthy, per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.
McCarthy's top competition in New Orleans appears to be Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, but he's the top choice for the New York Jets, who meet in-person with him Tuesday, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
There's certainly some dominoes in place whereas Glenn gets the Jets job and then McCarthy becomes the Saints' head coach based on recent reports.
We'll see how it all plays out soon enough, of course, but developments are moving rapidly now after Johnson chose the Bears.
