The Most Anticipated 2025 College Football Games

Morgan Moriarty

The 2024-25 college football season may be winding down, with the national championship game between Notre Dame and Ohio State set for January 20. The game will cap off an incredibly fun 2024 season, including the new, expanded 12-team playoff.

But it's never too early to start looking ahead to next season. After all, we're just seven short months from the 2025 college football season kicking off.

Let's take a peek at the most anticipated games from the upcoming campaign. While there are plenty of great matchups across the board, we'll focus on ones that seem to have the biggest hype surrounding them. We'll include the biggest nonconference games, in-conference matchups and rivalry week games.

Nonconference Matchups, Part 1

Ohio State vs. Texas, Aug. 30

How about a rematch of the Cotton Bowl semifinal to kick off the 2025 season? Although both squads will be reloading a good bit, we'll get a good look at Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning in this one. Ohio State, meanwhile, could be seeking to defend a national title.

LSU at Clemson, Aug. 30

This game can be a playoff resume-building matchup for both squads. Brian Kelly has yet to live up to his national-title-winning standards he came to Baton Rouge with and is under pressure to win big in 2025. Dabo Swinney looks to bring Clemson back to the CFP while heavily utilizing both the transfer portal and NIL this recruiting cycle.

Alabama at Florida State, Aug. 30

These two historic programs last met in 2017 in Atlanta, both ranked in the Top Five. The Tide won handily 24-7. Both Mike Norvell and Kalen DeBoer will be under some pressure to win after disappointing seasons in 2024. Both teams will also be starting new quarterbacks, as FSU looks primed to start Boston College transfer Thomas Castellanos. Alabama will choose between Ty Simpson, redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, and 2024 signee Keelon Russell.

Notre Dame at Miami, Aug. 30

These two formerly heated rivals haven't played each other since 2017. That year, Miami won 41-8. But Marcus Freeman and the Irish will be ready for this one, and Mario Cristobal will be looking to bring the Canes to the CFP with new quarterback Carson Beck. This renewed rivalry should be a lot of fun.

Nonconference Matchups, Part 2

TCU at North Carolina , Aug. 30

Bill Belichick will make his college football debut against TCU at home. Everyone will be eager to see how the eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach's team does its first game out. The Horned Frogs finished 9-4 this season.

Michigan at Oklahoma, Sept. 6

This Big Ten vs. SEC matchup should be a good gauge for where both of these programs are at. Michigan will be looking to be a legitimate playoff contender after a 7-5 finish in 2024. Oklahoma, meanwhile, will look to be a legitimate SEC contender after landing quarterback John Mateer from the transfer portal via Washington State.

Texas A&M-Notre Dame, Sept. 13

Notre Dame won 23-13 in College Station last season and will play for a national title next week. Texas A&M finished 8-5, finishing out the season with three straight losses to Auburn, Texas and USC. Mike Elko will be looking to make a statement in South Bend in this one.

Florida at Miami, Sept. 20

This one was an embarrassing loss for Florida earlier this season, losing 41-17 to the Canes at home. But the Gators finished 8-5 on the season, while navigating one of the toughest schedules in the country. The future looks bright under phenom quarterback DJ Lagway. New Canes quarterback Carson Beck threw three interceptions against the Gators with Georgia last season. If Miami wants a playoff spot, it can't afford to lose to the Gators at home.

ACC Conference Games

The ACC has yet to release the actual dates of the games just yet, but we do know the opponents.

Clemson vs. SMU, TBD

The ACC title game between these two was a thriller. The Mustangs overcame a 24-7 halftime deficit and tied the game at 31-all after scoring a touchdown with 16 seconds left. But Clemson won on a 56-yard game-winning field goal 34-31.

Syracuse at Miami, TBD

The Orange upset the Canes 42-38 last season at home, in a game that knocked Miami out of the playoff and ACC title-game hunt. Mario Cristobal will be looking to avenge that loss in 2025.

North Carolina vs. Duke, TBD

Upon his hiring at UNC, Bill Belichick said his very first words as a baby were "beat Duke." Belichick's father, Steve, coached at UNC in the 1950s. So you can bet the Tar Heels head coach will be fired up for this one. But he'll face a Duke team that just won nine games under first-year head coach Manny Diaz.

Clemson at Louisville, TBD

Louisville beat Clemson 33-21 earlier this season, and this time the Tigers will face Louisville on the road. If the Tigers want to make it back to the ACC title game, beating Louisville will be key. The Cardinals have gone 19-8 in Jeff Brohm's first two seasons.

Big Ten Conference Games

Ohio State at Illinois, Oct. 11

This one could be a trap game for Ohio State. Illini head coach Bret Bielema just led Illinois to its fifth 10-win season in school history in 2024. The Buckeyes haven't lost to Illinois since 2007, but this could be a sneaky good matchup.

Michigan at USC, Oct. 11

This one was another entertaining matchup from last season, with Michigan winning in Los Angeles 27-24. Michigan is looking to get back into the Big Ten title hunt in Sherrone Moore's Year Two. Lincoln Riley hasn't gained much confidence during his first three seasons but will be eager to make a playoff run in 2025.

Oregon at Penn State, Oct. 27

These two played last month in the Big Ten title game, and Penn State hung tough, ultimately losing 45-37. The rematch should be just as good, with Drew Allar returning in 2025, and Dan Lanning eager to course-correct from Oregon's first-round playoff exit this season.

Penn State at Ohio State, Nov. 1

The then-No. 3 Nittany Lions fell to No. 4 Ohio State by seven points in early November this past season, so James Franklin will be looking for his first win over Ohio State since 2016.

Big 12 Conference Games

Like the ACC, the Big 12 has yet to release its full schedule with dates.

Colorado vs. Arizona State, TBD

Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes will have to move on without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter in 2025. Meanwhile, Arizona State brings back quarterback Sam Leavitt from its Big 12 title team from this season. This one should be a great game between Sanders and Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham.

BYU vs. Utah, TBD

BYU looked like the favorite to win the Big 12 all season, but two late-season losses to Kansas and Arizona State cost it that chance. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham will be eager to prove he's still got it in 2025, following just his third losing season in school history in Provo.

Iowa State vs. Arizona State, TBD

Iowa State reached 11 wins for the first time in school history this season, capped off with a Pop-Tarts bowl victory over Miami. The Cyclones had a shot at the playoff, but losing 45-19 to Arizona State in the Big 12 title game dashed those hopes. Iowa State will be eager to avenge that loss from December.

SEC Conference Games

Alabama at Georgia, Sept. 27

Earlier this season, Georgia nearly overcame a 30-7 halftime deficit against Alabama, scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. But the Crimson Tide hung on to win 41-34. Both Alabama and Georgia will be retooling their rosters in 2025, but this one should be another great game.

Ole Miss at Georgia, Oct. 18

The Rebels beat the Dawgs earlier this season, and many thought Ole Miss had a case for the playoff with the victory. Lane Kiffin and the Rebels will be looking to be a legitimate SEC contender in 2025.

LSU at Alabama, Nov. 8

This rivalry is always a special one, and LSU will look for its first win over the Tide since 2022. If the Tigers lose three straight to Alabama, it'll be yet another knock on head coach Brian Kelly.

Florida at Ole Miss, Nov. 15

Speaking of Ole Miss' playoff hopes, the Rebels' 24-17 loss to Florida earlier this season was a knock against their case. At this point in the season, the Gators could be looking to make their own playoff case with a big road win.

Texas at Georgia, Nov. 15

Georgia beat Texas twice this season, winning 30-15 in the regular season and 22-19 in overtime in the SEC Championship. Steve Sarkisian will be eager to get one over Kirby Smart, but he'll have to win on the road in 2025 to do so.

Rivalry Week Games

Ohio State at Michigan, Nov. 29

The Game is college football's 365-day-a-year rivalry. Michigan's fourth straight win over Ohio State earlier this season ended with flag planting and pepper spray. But it also arguably helped fuel the Buckeyes' national championship run.

Clemson at South Carolina, Nov. 29

South Carolina has won two out of the last three meetings between these two. The Gamecocks seemingly knocked the Tigers out of playoff contention earlier this season, before Syracuse beating Miami sent the Tigers to the ACC title game.

Georgia vs. Georgia Tech, Nov. 29

A rematch of this game that went into nine overtimes last month? Yes, please. Georgia prevailed 44-42, but Tech and Brent Key proved the Yellow Jackets are a program on the rise. This one will be played in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta instead of Bobby Dodd.

Auburn vs. Alabama, Nov. 29

Alabama has won the last five straight in this rivalry. But depending on how the rest of the Tide's 2025 season goes, a loss to Auburn could put head coach Kalen DeBoer even more squarely on the hot seat.

Texas vs. Texas A&M, Nov. 29

Texas' 17-7 win over A&M earlier this season wasn't exactly the most exciting game to watch. But the Lone Star Showdown is a storied and heated rivalry, getting renewed for the first time since 2011 in 2024. Now that these two schools both play in the SEC, this rivalry should continue for years to come.
