The Bucs Are Back in the Playoffs
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers survived an ugly start to Sunday's game against division rivals, the New Orleans Saints, to win the NFC South and cash their ticket to the playoffs.
It was the culmination of a career year for quarterback Baker Mayfield, who tossed his 40th and 41st touchdown Sunday and finished with over 4,000 yards through the air.
The former No. 1 overall pick, whose career appeared to be over as he jumped from Cleveland to Los Angeles to Carolina before ending up in Tampa Bay, has injected the organization with his trademark "magic," and given the team steadiness at quarterback that few could have imagined when Tom Brady retired at the end of the 2022 season.
On the game's final play, he found wide receiver Mike Evans for nine yards, tying the veteran wideout with Hall of Famer Jerry Rice for most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with 11.
The defense bore down in the second half of the game, giving up just three points. It was par for the course for a team whose head coach, Raheem Morris, has become known for his in-game adjustments.
The Atlanta Falcons, who would have won the division with a win and Bucs loss, gave up 425 yards of offense to the Carolina Panthers and lost 44-38 in overtime.
Tampa Bay will play either the loser of Sunday's NFC North title game between Detroit and Minnesota, or the Washington Commanders, depending on the outcome of the Los Angeles Rams' game against Seattle.
