The pro wrestling rumor mill could thaw out even the coldest of winter storms right now.
Go figure—the week of WWE's Raw debuting on Netflix has arrived.
Fittingly, said debut happens to occur right as the build to WrestleMania really begins in earnest. What would normally be a rather standard, albeit differently named Raw, instead stands as a launching pad that could probably send things to orbit.
Understandably, this means the rumor mill boasts massive names like John Cena, CM Punk, and Roman Reigns, to name a few, as all could play central roles in that Netflix showcase and are all but guaranteed to sit in top 'Mania slots.
To help fans keep pace with all the buzz, here's a look at the biggest items of note from the mill and whether they should buy or sell on each.
John Cena Going After a Title?
The Rumor
The year-long John Cena retirement tour is about to get started. And according to Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), there is "legit" talk about him going after a top title in a WrestleMania slot.
Reaction
It wouldn't make sense for Cena's retirement tour to avoid top titles, especially when he can break more records if he wins one for a last time. We're far removed from the Super Cena fan indifference era and further than ever into the internet-fan-knowledge era, so the reception to a title win would be amazing.
Buy or Sell?
Big buy. What's more interesting is how, not if. Does Cena win the Royal Rumble? Is he going after Cody Rhodes, or turning his attention to the other top title? Either is captivating, but the ripple effect on guys like Reigns, Punk and The Bloodline would be massive.
Is John Cena vs. Logan Paul in the Works?
The Rumor
Many ideas continue to make the rounds for Cena's retirement tour. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), there is "interest within the WWE" for a match between Cena and Logan Paul.
Reaction
Can we not? Paul was one of the most impressive rookies in modern history and exceeded all expectations. A match with Cena would have big mainstream appeal. But at the same time, Cena's retirement tour won't need the boost as is—and there are only so many dates in the year and better opponents with built-in stories that could occupy that tour.
Buy or Sell?
While this topic has surely come up, it's a sell on Cena vs. Paul happening at any major event. It feels like a match that would require a "big 3" PLE stage, but those spaces need to host historic farewell matches against the likes of Reigns, CM Punk, Randy Orton and other career-long rivalries, if not title matches.
Punk vs. Reigns Slated for WrestleMania?
The Rumor
WWE putting CM Punk against Reigns at 'Mania has been gaining steam. According to Meltzer (h/t Ortman), it has been "going around in the past week."
Reaction
A little vague, but no great shock here. As one could expect, recent encounters between Punk and Reigns, courtesy of Paul Heyman, went absolutely bonkers when gauging fan interest in arenas and on social media. The two are just money together because of their long history together, never mind the Heyman connection.
Buy or Sell?
Buys don't come much easier than this. WWE would be downright foolish not to consider a 'Mania match between these two. What's interesting is how it would slot on the card and impact stories like The Rock and Bloodline. There's no easy answer, but the two verbally sparring already is some of the most captivating stuff the promotion has put on television in years.
Becky Lynch Return Speculation
The Rumor
Becky Lynch's inevitable return has rumors evolving. Case in point, WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman) has reported that her return "will factor heavily into high-level WrestleMania plans."
Reaction
This is an evolution of the usual "Lynch is returning soon" rumor. It's obviously going to happen at the earliest on the Netflix debut and at the latest at the Royal Rumble. She's been gone for a while, and all involved aren't likely to wait until after 'Mania.
Buy or Sell?
Easiest buy of the week. WWE isn't going to bring Lynch back during the build to a 'Mania and throw her in a mid-tier feud. She will get a shot at a top title holder or head up a marquee program with the likes of Rhea Ripley, or even an also-returning Charlotte Flair.
WWE Starting Up a New Program?
The Rumor
WWE could be reviving an independent promotion soon. According to PWInsider (h/t Jeff Whalen of Rajah.com), WWE will bring back EVOLVE and feature developmental talent from the WWE ID program there.
Reaction
It certainly makes sense. Gabe Sapolsky, former EVOLVE founder, still works within the company with talent and otherwise. And it's a natural fit with the WWE ID developmental program, especially with WWE NXT so mainstream these days.
Buy or Sell?
Buy. WWE has been sitting on this one for a little while now, having bought EVOLVE in 2020. It feels like a smart way to elevate the company's developmental program while shooting footage for, at the least, streaming on social media platforms.
