Eagles' Saquon Barkley Tops 2,000 Rushing Yards in Chase for Eric Dickerson's Record

For the first time since 2020, an NFL running back has rushed for more than 2,000 yards in a single season.

Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley reached the 2,000-yard mark on Sunday as his squad walloped the Dallas Cowboys 41-7. He entered the game with 1,838 rushing yards and got to 2,000 early in the fourth quarter, becoming the first player to do so since Derrick Henry passed the milestone for the Tennessee Titans.

Barkley is also closing in on the most rushing yards in a single season in NFL history. Los Angeles Rams great Eric Dickerson gained 2,105 rushing yards in 1984, when the league played a 16-game schedule, and the Eagles star needs 101 yards to break the record.

Minnesota Vikings legend Adrian Peterson came the closest in 2012 when he recorded 2,097 rushing yards.

Barkley had 167 rushing yards on 31 carries Sunday, putting him at 2,005 yards with one game to play. It's feasible Barkley could get to Dickerson's record next week, especially against the New York Giants, who gave up 125 yards and two touchdowns to Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor on Sunday.

The Eagles could, of course, decrease Barkley's workload in the final game of the season considering they're hoping to keep him healthy for a potential Super Bowl run. Philadelphia has already clinched a playoff spot and the NFC East, so there's not much at stake against the Giants in game No. 17.

If Dickerson had it his way, his record would stand after next week.

"I don't think he'll break it. But if he breaks it, he breaks it," Dickerson told the Los Angeles Times' Sam Farmer. "Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not. I don't pull no punches on that. But I'm not whining about it. He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football. That's the way I look at it. If he's fortunate to get over 2,000 yards and get the record, it's a great record to have."

Regardless of what happens, Barkley has had a season for the ages in his first year with the Eagles. A record would just be the icing on top.
