The pro wrestling rumor mill is immune to things like the holidays.
This week is perhaps the best proof yet of such an idea, considering the heavyweight rumblings making the rounds as the first episode of Raw on Netflix inches closer.
Beyond prepping the foundation for that major shift in the sport of pro wrestling, other rumblings include the expected exclamation marks like potential surprise returns and the latest on contract sagas for top stars—the latter at a time fans always wonder if huge names might switch companies.
A teaser? Becky Lynch, Kevin Owens and John Cena are staples of the rumblings this week.
To assist fans in keeping up with the noise, here's a look at the top buzz and whether onlookers should buy or sell on each item.
Becky Lynch Return Latest
The Rumor
Becky Lynch keeps popping up in the promotional material for the first Raw on Netflix. As Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats pointed out, this has led to the buzz that she will be at the January 6 premiere.
Reaction
Now feels like the right time. Fans haven't seen Lynch since the first half of 2024, but speculation that she might leave WWE always felt silly. She's all over the promotional material for a reason and the women's division could use the shakeup.
Buy or Sell?
Easiest buy of the week. The promo for the event says it all. Why wouldn't WWE trot out one of its biggest international stars on such a stage? It feels like it plays into the next rumor, too...
Charlotte Flair Return Details
The Rumor
Charlotte Flair's return continues to be both obvious in its nearness and mysterious in its exactness. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), said return is near and will have a "darker twist" than fans might expect.
Reaction
Flair's return from injury always felt like a 2025 thing, either at Netflix or perhaps in the Royal Rumble. It's fitting that the rumors have jumped in pace now, which might just hint at a return right alongside Lynch to really make things interesting.
Buy or Sell?
Let's buy on the nearness of the return—but sell on the "darker" persona. One of Flair's big weaknesses over the years has been a lack of variety of character. Going darker now sounds good, but it sure sounds like a space already occupied by Rhea Ripley and others. Either way, it should be interesting to see.
Huge AEW Return Soon?
The Rumor
WWE isn't the only one getting massive return rumors. According to Fightful Select (h/t Ortman), Kenny Omega could return at the "Worlds End" event on Saturday.
Reaction
The note mentions that the how of Omega's usage remains an unknown, so it could be something as simple as a quick walk-out to get fans hyped. Either way, said fans should be thrilled to see one of the best on the planet back in the mix in some capacity.
Buy or Sell?
Buy. Technically speaking, Omega hasn't been in the ring since the tail end of 2023. But he's already apparently set to return with a match in Japan in early 2025, so getting him back on AEW programming to hype the next "season" of the show makes plenty of sense.
John Cena's Last Match Plans?
The Rumor
The John Cena retirement tour is almost upon fans. One rumor has skipped right to the end, with WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman) reporting that the idea of Logan Paul as Cena's final opponent got "resounding disapproval" in WWE's creative room.
Reaction
Yes, best to leave that idea on the cutting-room floor. Paul doesn't even crack the top 15 or more ideal final opponents for Cena. Randy Orton, CM Punk, Roman Reigns, any number of developmental guys who could " retire" Cena, the list goes on and on.
Buy or Sell?
Buying all the laughter and disapproval thrown at this idea. Paul has star power, but the conversation starts and ends there. Cena is so big that his final match transcends the pro wrestling sphere in a major way and it simply won't need that type of help. WWE can do infinitely better for Cena's goodbye.
Kevin Owens Contract Update
The Rumor
The Kevin Owens contract saga has been quietly lurking in the background for a while now. According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select (h/t Ortman), it is "safe to assume at this point" that Owens is back on a long-term deal.
Reaction
As always, it's worth pointing out that Owens probably wouldn't be in such premier, company-leading feud after feud if he had one foot out the door. Also worth really spotlighting is that AEW's massive struggles lately actually hurt a Superstar's negotiating power at the table with these companies, which would seem to swing the odds in WWE's favor on re-signings.
Buy or Sell?
Call this the easiest buy of the week, too. Owens has felt like a "WWE lifer" since his arrival and that's only been cemented by huge Triple H-endorsed title wins, getting the "Stone Cold" match and on and on. Any Owens-leaving-WWE speculation was always just silly internet chatter.
