Amid Miami's tough start to the 2024-25 season, head coach Jim Larranaga decided it was time for a change.
The Hurricanes announced Larranaga stepped down from his position on Thursday. Associate head coach Bill Courtney has been promoted to interim head coach.
"After more than fifty years in college coaching, it is simply time," Larranaga said in a statement. "There is never a great moment to step away, but I owe it to our student-athletes, our staff and the University of Miami to make this move now when my heart is simply no longer in the game and I owe it to Liz, Jay, Jon, and my grandchildren to be a greater part of their lives.
"The University needs a new leader of the program, one who is both adept at and embracing of the new world of intercollegiate athletics. It has been the honor of a lifetime to be a part of the Hurricane Family and to represent this world-class institution. Most importantly, I have been so blessed to have coached the hundreds of young men who chose to wear the UM jersey and who have gone on to flourish in their respective journeys. I will always be a Cane."
Larranaga also told reporters he felt he couldn't "successfully navigate this whole new world that I was dealing with," noting he had a conversation with an agent who told him he could "get involved" with a player if he was willing to go to $1.1 million in NIL money.
Michelle Kaufman of the Miami Herald first reported on Larranaga's decision to leave Miami.
The Hurricanes fell to 4-8 after an overtime loss to Mount St. Mary's last week.
It was less than two years ago that Larranaga led Miami to its first Final Four appearance in program history. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes were unable to sustain that level of success.
Miami has lost 18 of its last 22 games dating back to last season. The team ended the 2023-24 campaign on a 10-game losing streak. Despite a roster overhaul that included 10 newcomers for the 2024-25 season, the Hurricanes have still struggled to get back to their previous winning ways under Larranaga.
According to Kaufman, the 75-year-old repeatedly lamented that the team was not coming together as he had hoped during the post-game press conferences following the eight losses this season.
Larranaga is a 40-year coaching veteran and was in his 14th season at Miami and is the winningest coach in program history with a record of 274-174. He led the Hurricanes to their first ACC regular-season titles in 2013 and 2023, and he earned Coach of the Year honors from multiple outlets during his career.
Miami will try to regroup before it returns to action on New Year's Day in a road matchup against Boston College.
