The list of MLB teams that have received a meeting with Rōki Sasaki continues to expand.
Texas Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young confirmed the club met with Sasaki last week, but he declined to provide any additional information about what the two sides discussed.
Per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Giants are "believed to have met" with Sasaki and his representatives.
This makes at least four teams that Sasaki has met with or will meet with, possibly five if you include the Giants.
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman confirmed on Dec. 18 the club had an in-person meeting with Sasaki. The New York Mets are believed to have met with the 23-year-old.
Per Bruce Levine of 670 The Score, Sasaki and the Chicago Cubs met Dec. 20 in Los Angeles.
Not listed are the two teams generally regarded as the favorites in the Sasaki sweepstakes. In a survey of executives around the league conducted by MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo about where they think Sasaki will sign, the Los Angeles Dodgers received 11 votes and San Diego Padres received seven votes. The Rangers and Giants both received one vote.
Even though the Padres have yet to meet with Sasaki, they aren't hiding the fact they are interested.
After Sasaki was officially posted by the Chiba Lotte Marines, Padres manager Mike Shildt said in an interview with MLB Network Radio (h/t MLB.com's AJ Cassavell) they plan to put on a "full-court press" for the two-time NPB All-Star.
In theory, all 30 teams should be putting forth their best efforts to sign Sasaki. He's limited by what he can earn under international signing rules since he's under the age of 25. The bonus pool for teams ranges from $5.1 million to $7.6 million.
Sasaki is expected to sign after Jan. 15, when the 2025 international signing period begins. The deadline for him to get a deal done is Jan. 23 when his 45-day posting window expires. He will be returned to Chiba Lotta for next season if a deal isn't reached, but there's no expectation that will happen.
The Rangers could use another starter after bringing back Nathan Eovaldi on a three-year, $75 million contract, otherwise they are banking on Jacob deGrom, Jon Gray and Tyler Mahle to stay healthy to carry the rotation.
The Giants made one splashy move already this offseason by giving Willy Adames to a seven-year, $182 million deal. They still need a lot more help if they hope to challenge the Dodgers and Padres in the NL West next season.
Sasaki has a 2.10 ERA with 505 strikeouts in 394.2 innings in four NPB seasons. He finished 10-5 with a 2.35 ERA in 18 appearances during the 2024 campaign.
