NFL Insider: Mike Vrabel 'Hands Down' the 'Most Sought-After Coach' over Ben Johnson

Cleveland Browns consultant and ex-Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is reportedly "hands down" the most "sought-out" person in the 2025 head coaching cycle.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported the latest on Tuesday's edition of the Scoop City podcast (25:20).

"I think without a doubt headed into this coaching cycle here—Mike Vrabel is hands down going to be the most sought-out coach, because we're seeing the trend once again being about a leader, a CEO that can quickly establish a culture and an identity for teams that are in need," Russini said.

Vrabel was the Tennessee Titans' head coach for six seasons, going 54-45 from 2018-2023. The Titans made the playoffs three times under Vrabel, making the AFC Championship in 2019 and winning the AFC South in 2020 and 2021.

The franchise hadn't made the playoffs three straight years since 1991-1993 during the Houston Oilers days, so Vrabel pulled off an impressive accomplishment.

He's been discussed as a hot coaching name by other reporters as well, including for the New York Jets job in particular. According to SNY's Connor Hughes, "multiple NFL sources believe [Vrabel] is the coach the [New York Jets] covet the most."

ESPN's Dan Orlovsky also had this to say on the Pat McAfee Show recently:

But Russini's report is certainly a notable statement considering the resume of Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, whose offenses have gone fifth, fifth and now first in scoring in 2022, 2023 and 2024. The Lions also own an NFC-best 13-2 record this year and are right in the mix for a Super Bowl.

The 38-year-old Johnson was in the mix for the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks' head coaching jobs last year before with withdrawing his name for both spots, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

He was a big name last coaching cycle, and that will be the case again next year. Russini noted that she thinks he's going to be "pretty specific about what he wants to do here" and further elaborated that "wants to make sure he can succeed," noting how smart that was given that other coaches have essentially found themselves in no-win spots.

Right now, Johnson is in a great position as the leader for an incredible Lions' offense, but he should be a big name this offseason as well.

Ultimately, though, Vrabel should almost certainly find a new place to coach in 2025, especially given the amount of openings now (New York Jets, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints) and the ones that could be available in a few weeks.
