Despite the prevailing belief that head coach Mike McCarthy's time with the Dallas Cowboys would come to an end after his contract expires after the 2024 season, there are reportedly some around the NFL who surprisingly now think he's staying put.
During this week's episode of Scoop City (32:55 mark), The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported, "I have spoken to people around the league who believe that Mike McCarthy will be safe."
The Cowboys have won back-to-back games and improved to 7-8 with Sunday night's surprising upset victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who entered the game in first place in the NFC South. Dallas put forth a spirited effort that included two turnovers in the fourth quarter that helped seal the win.
Sunday night's performance was viewed as a positive sign that the Cowboys players support McCarthy. When Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer asked McCarthy about maintaining a strong connection with his players, he revealed that he would voluntarily step down as head coach if that wasn't the case.
"I mean, absolutely. To be frank with you, if I didn't feel that way, then I would leave," McCarthy said. "Where I am in my career, I'm fortunate enough to be in a place, and a space mentally and emotionally, where I can make that choice. But yeah, if I didn't feel that I was connected [with the players] and putting us in the best position to win, then I would step aside."
Now, it sounds like McCarthy will have the opportunity to continue his tenure in Dallas as the team tries to regroup for a potential playoff run in 2025.
The next two weeks could go a long way toward determining McCarthy's future, so the Cowboys will try to keep the momentum going in the right direction when they return to action on Sunday in an NFC East clash against the Philadelphia Eagles.
