OSU Lands Former WVU RB CJ Donaldson, Purdue TE Max Klare in Transfer Portal

Ohio State will likely need some more running back depth next season if and when TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins head to the NFL, and it found some Monday.

The Buckeyes added CJ Donaldson from the transfer portal after he played the last three seasons at West Virginia. Donaldson has shown a nose for the end zone, as he scored a combined 31 touchdowns during those three years.

The Scarlet and Gray weren't done, as ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Purdue tight end Max Klare committed to the Big Ten powerhouse Monday as well.

Klare was a go-to weapon for the Boilermakers this season and finished with 51 catches for 685 yards and four touchdowns. He figures to have plenty of openings playing in Ohio State's offense given all the defensive attention wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate will draw.

As for Donaldson, he will surely have an opportunity to compete for plenty of playing time when he arrives at Ohio State.

Freshman James Peoples is the next running back up after the Henderson and Judkins combination, and he had just 49 carries this season. Fellow freshman Sam Williams-Dixon would follow Peoples on the depth chart, although he had seven total carries in 2024.

While Peoples in particular flashed his potential this season, Donaldson brings far more experience.

He has 421 carries for 2,058 yards and 30 touchdowns to go with 32 catches for 190 yards and one touchdown as a receiver the last three years. He scored two touchdowns in West Virginia's bowl loss to Memphis, which was his fourth multi-touchdown game of the season.

Ohio State will surely be facing plenty of roster transition heading into the 2025 campaign after so many seniors and experienced players returned for a run at a potential championship in 2024.

Those title dreams are still alive after the Buckeyes defeated Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Next up is a showdown against top-seeded Oregon, which is a rematch from the Ducks' one-point victory during the regular season.

But expectations are always high in Columbus, Ohio, so it is up to head coach Ryan Day and his coaching staff to reload the roster for next season. And Donaldson provides stability and some much-needed depth in the running back room, meaning the staff can turn elsewhere in the portal and address openings at offensive line and other positions.
