Bradley Beal's time with the Washington Wizards may have taught him not to rely on unconfirmed trade rumors.
Beal said on Friday he doesn't plan on worrying about a potential trade involving Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler until something is confirmed by the Phoenix Suns.
"I'm a Phoenix Sun, and I'm here, and I'm in a uniform," Beal told reporters. "I don't pay attention to that, man... they did that with me for 10 years."
Beal was the subject of frequent trade rumors in Washington, D.C. during the years leading up to his acquisition by the Suns in June 2023.
NBA insider Jake Fischer previously reported that there is a "rising belief" around the NBA that the Heat will look to trade Butler, who is playing on a potentially expiring contract thanks to his player option next season, ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline.
ESPN's Shams Charania then reported on Tuesday that the Suns and the Golden State Warriors were Butler's top two preferred destinations for a potential trade.
Butler is slated to make $48.8 million for the Heat this season. Given that the Suns can't aggregate salary in a trade and that Kevin Durant and Devin Booker are locks to stay in Phoenix, sending out Beal's $50.2 million cap hit is the most viable path for Phoenix acquire the Miami star.
But Beal has a full no-trade clause, and Brett Siegel recently reported for ClutchPoints that there has been "zero indication" that Beal would be willing to waive that clause in order to facilitate a trade to Miami.
"Beal is happy with the Suns, and those feelings have been reciprocated by Phoenix's front office... With this said, that does not mean feelings will change closer to the trade deadline," Seigel wrote on Friday.
Beal told Andscape's Marc J. Spears last year that the Heat were his "initial favorite" team ahead of his trade to the Suns.
But even if Beal decides to okay a potential trade to Miami, the Heat would need to consider the cap ramifications of taking on Beal's $53.7 million cap hit next season. According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, that cost and the Suns' lack of tradable draft picks make a potential trade for Butler "highly unlikely."
The Heat and Suns could still look to work out a trade before the deadline, but the obstacles to a potential deal combined with Beal's control over his contract means he can afford not to focus on trade rumors as the Suns look to climb up from ninth place in the West.
