The Golden State Warriors aren't limiting themselves as they brainstorm outside additions that could potentially help prior to the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline.
Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported Friday the Warriors "should absolutely be labeled as the favorites" if any team winds up landing Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. But the six-time All-Star is one of multiple players Golden State is looking at.
General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the front office have examined nine other targets, per Siegel: Brooklyn Nets forwards Cameron Johnson, Dorian Finney-Smith, Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma, Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vučević, Washington Wizards center Jonas Valančiūnas, Toronto Raptors forward Bruce Brown, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo, Portland Trail Blazers guard Matisse Thybulle, and Atlanta Hawks forward De'Andre Hunter.
The Warriors tried and failed to get Paul George and Lauri Markkanen in trades over the summer. Clearly Dunleavy is willing to consider something bold in the quest for one more championship with Stephen Curry in the Bay Area.
The urgency to get something done might be growing, too, thanks to Golden State's prolonged slide following a 12-3 start.
Acquiring Dennis Schröder in the wake of De'Anthony Melton's season-ending injury helps. The veteran point guard can take some of the scoring and playmaking burden away from Curry in addition to running the offense when Curry is resting.
Still, nobody is expecting Schröder to significantly raise the Warriors' ceiling.
Butler might achieve that, but his availability could be the biggest hurdle to overcome. The Athletic's David Aldridge reported on Dec. 14 the Heat are "indeed seriously listening" on Butler but haven't received a "serious offer."
Shams Charania of ESPN followed up Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show and said "there's no urgency" on Miami's side with Butler heading toward free agency:
Assuming Butler is off the table, Dunleavy would be left shopping in the lower tier of the trade market, which is where the nine other players cited by Siegel reside.
Four games separate the 10th-place Warriors from the Memphis Grizzlies in second. Maybe the marginal gains from Schröder and other secondary trade pieces would combine to make a big difference for Golden State.
