Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy had some fun with Thursday's news that revealed New York Jets owner Woody Johnson reportedly didn't want to trade for him because of his Madden rating.
Jeudy took to social media and interacted with Chad Johnson, who has worked with the Madden video game franchise:
This comes after The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt, Dianna Russini and Michael Silver reported Johnson vetoed an offseason trade between the Jets and Denver Broncos that included Jeudy because he thought the receiver's Madden rating "wasn't high enough."
The report from The Athletic details an organization mired in dysfunction under Johnson's leadership, but the Madden story stood out among other details of a poor culture and working environment.
That Madden played a role in the team owner's decision-making process underscored the increasing influence of his teenage sons, Brick and Jack, who were included in some team meetings at the Jets' facilities.
"When we're discussing things, you'll hear Woody cite something that Brick or Jack read online that's being weighed equally against whatever opinion someone else in the department has," one Jets executive said.
According to The Athletic, Johnson also pushed back on signing guard John Simpson in free agency because of his awareness rating in Madden, although New York still signed him.
Rosenblatt and Russini reported in November that Johnson vetoed a trade for Jeudy that would have sent Allen Lazard and a day-two pick in the 2024 NFL draft to the Denver Broncos. Yet this provides more details on the process that ultimately ended in Denver moving the receiver to the Cleveland Browns for 2024 fifth- and sixth-round picks.
Given the timing of the trade and discussions involving Jeudy, his rating in the Madden NFL 24 game would have been an 83 overall. That would have made him the second-best receiver on the Jets at the time behind only Garrett Wilson's 84 overall.
Jeudy is still ranked an 83 overall in the current ratings, although perhaps his Thursday plea will lead to an increase.
He has played well for the Browns with 70 catches for a career-high 1,052 yards and four touchdowns.
As for the Jets, they ended up trading for star receiver Davante Adams during the 2024 campaign. Yet that has not resulted in more wins, as they are 4-10 and playing out the string on another lost season in Johnson's tenure.
New York last made the playoffs during the 2010 campaign.
