Backstage WWE and AEW Rumors: Latest on CM Punk, Penta El Zero Miedo, and More

Erik Beaston

As 2024 draws to a close, CM Punk is against the most buzzed-about Superstar in the WWE Universe, thanks to a red-hot rivalry with Seth Rollins.

That won't stop entering 2025, as The Best in the World and his plans for WrestleMania 41 season make headlines.

Such is the case in this collection of wrestling rumors from top industry insiders, which also includes the latest on a dream match, the Penta El Zero Miedo tease, and Ring of Honor's Final Battle main event.

Latest on CM Punk and WrestleMania 41

WrestleVotes reported on Q&A with Bill Apter that WWE wants CM Punk to be involved in a world title match at WrestleMania 41.

The question is which title he targets and who is holding it at The Show of Shows come April 19-20 in Las Vegas.

Gunther would seem the most logical choice but does WWE believe in The Ring General enough to make him the guy on a marquee beside Punk? His creative thus far in his World Heavyweight Championship reign would indicate otherwise.

Still, Punk name-dropped the Austrian as far back as September, when he appeared to set his sights on his gold after Bash in Berlin.

Punk has hinted at targeting Cody Rhodes and the Undisputed WWE Championship, even teasing finishing his story. Still, that does not seem the most likely path to The Showcase of the Immortals.

The Best in the World battles Seth Rollins to kick off the new year and WWE's run on Netflix on January 6 on Raw. Perhaps The Visionary will wrest the title away from Gunther before WrestleMania, setting up a rematch with Punk at the Allegiant Stadium in Vegas.

Whatever the case, Punk is one of the most engaging, captivating and polarizing figures in professional wrestling. No matter what he's involved in, he creates interest and excitement around it.

That bodes well for WWE and its biggest event of the year if and when his path to a championship shot becomes more apparent.

A Major Dream Match for 2025?

Speaking of Punk, another high-profile match could be on the horizon in 2025.

WrestleVotes also reported that WWE is interested in running a matchup between The Straight Edge Superstar and Roman Reigns.

The company has already established tensions between them in the build to Survivor Series, where it was clear they did not like or trust each other.

Add to that the mysterious favor Paul Heyman owes Punk for agreeing to join The OTC and The OG Bloodline for WarGames, and the creative team has an intriguing foundation on which to build.

Would WWE really promote a match of that magnitude for a show outside of WrestleMania, though?

It is the last in a dying breed of legitimate dream matches, a showdown between two of the biggest stars of the last 20 years.

The only comparable stage for that match would be SummerSlam. That would be a monster main event for a show that will be spread across two nights on August 2-3 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Regardless of where it takes place, Punk vs. Reigns is one of those must-see matches still on the table for WWE and one that will attract interest from diehard and casual fans alike.

The Penta El Zero Miedo Tease

A teaser for the arrival of a new Superstar aired Monday night on Raw and immediately caught the attention of fans.

A simple video, it depicted a zero that transitions into the "no" symbol.

Immediately, speculation turned to Penta El Zero Miedo, who is now a free agent after completing his AEW contract.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com wrote: "The belief among those we've spoken with is that the video is for former AEW and Lucha Underground star Penta."

As one-half of The Lucha Bros with his brother, Rey Fenix, Penta helped lay the groundwork for the AEW tag team division and was one of the company's originals.

Fenix recently had injury time added to his contract, preventing him from exiting the company and joining his older brother in WWE.

Penta is a world-renowned competitor who is recognized away from the squared circle, thanks to his status as one of San Francisco 49ers star tight end George Kittle's favorite wrestlers. The five-time Pro Bowler even uses the "cero miedo" hand taunt after big plays.

Long one of the most marketable wrestlers in the industry, Penta will arrive in a company ready to make him the fully recognized megastar he has always had the potential to be if he joins WWE.

That there are a plethora of matches against the likes of CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Finn Bálor, Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and even the members of the OG and new Bloodlines makes his impending arrival that much more exciting for longtime fans of the Mexican.

Ring of Honor Final Battle Main Event Update

For the second time in as many years, Athena and Billie Starkz will headline Ring of Honor's year-ending pay-per-view, Final Battle.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select wrote: "As of Wednesday, Fightful Select was told that Athena vs. Billie Starkz was the plan to close the show. Athena also told Denise Salcedo this during an interview on Wednesday."

Athena enters Friday's match as the ROH women's world champion having held the title for two full years. She has been an unstoppable force and the cornerstone of Tony Khan's incarnation of the promotion.

One of the best wrestlers in either of Khan's wrestling properties, the 36-year-old has earned even greater recognition for what has been an unforgettable run.

Starkz is a face of the future and has already established herself as one of the best young talents in the industry, thanks in large part to the two-year storyline that has brought her and her mentor back together for another championship clash.

Last year, Athena defeated Starks by submission just short of 30 minutes in a phenomenal match.

This year, the 20-year-old arrives more confident than ever having captured the ROH Women's TV Championship. Though she dropped it to Red Velvet, she built belief enough to walk out on Athena, signaling a babyface turn and setting up the show's main event.

Sapp did note that Khan billed the show as a "double main event," which opens the possibility that ROH world champion Chris Jericho vs. Matt Cardona closes the show.

That would be a mistake as the story there is not as strong and for those ROH fans who have stuck with the product and invested in the one truly great storyline it has produced, it would be an insult.

Starkz vs. Athena is the real main event and should go on last at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Friday.
