Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage of AEW Dynamite Holiday Bash on December 18.
We are still in the middle of the Continental Classic, so a couple more matches in the tournament took place in addition to the rest of the action.
Here is a look at what All Elite Wrestling advertised for Wednesday's show at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington:
- Darby Allin vs. Will Ospreay
- Shelton Benjamin vs. The Beast Mortos
- The Death Riders vs. Orange Cassidy, Adam Page and Jay White
- Mercedes Moné vs. Anna Jay (TBS Championship)
- Hook and Katsuyori Shibata vs. Christian Cage and Nick Wayne
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's show.
Mercedes Moné vs. Anna Jay (TBS Championship)
Dynamite opened with White and Cassidy having an interview with Renee Paquette backstage.
When we went to the arena, Moné made her way to the ring to defend the TBS title against Jay.
The titleholder offered a handshake, but it was just a ruse to slap her. The CEO took the challenger down in a headlock, but Jay was far from done.
You could see Jay looking more aggressive than usual, but Moné was her usual cocky self. This was a huge opportunity for Anna, but the champion was acting like this was just another Wednesday.
This played out in a relatively predictable way. Jay put up a great fight and came close to winning a few times, but The CEO kept finding a way to stay in the match.
They had a very competitive sequence before Moné hit her finisher to get the win and retain the title.
This was a fun match that reminded us once again that Jay is a future champion. It had a couple of hiccups but nothing too bad.
Result: Moné defeated Jay
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
- White is one of those guys who is funny without even trying.
- The way Moné puts a little extra flare on her moves is why she stands out. She doesn't just choke someone with her boot, she uses both feet at once while talking trash the whole time.
- Jay had moved out of the way long before The CEO missed the meteora in the corner. It looked very awkward.
Nick Wayne and Christian Cage vs. Hook and Katsuyori Shibata
MJF came to the ring and gave a promo about his upcoming match with Adam Cole.
The segment ended with Cole attacking MJF after tricking him with a video to make him think he was backstage.
The next match saw Hook team up with Shibata to take on Wayne and Cage. Hook and Wayne began for their teams, and surprisingly, the latter scored the first takedown on the former FTW champion.
The Wrestler and The Patriarch tagged in and fought for control. The first several minutes of this match were pretty uneventful. Both teams had the upper hand at different points, but we didn't see anything chaotic like we usually do in AEW tag bouts, which was a good thing in this case.
This match had a steady pace that allowed all four competitors to look good at different times.
Thanks to interference from Kip Sabian and Shayna Wayne, Nick was able to get a surprising pin on Shibata to claim the win.
Result: Cage and Wayne defeated Hook and Shibata
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
- MJF had a picture of Cole photoshopped to look skinnier than pre-serum Steve Rogers.
- The audio was weird during entrances. You could barely hear Hook's music.
- It's impressive that Shibata's chops to Cage were still making noise. The shirt Cage wears muffled the sound, but not entirely.
- Wayne trying to look like a tough guy against Shibata was the least convincing thing ever.
Shelton Benjamin vs. The Beast Mortos
Ricochet came out for an interview but before he could say too much, The Hurt Syndicate joined him in the ring.
MVP ripped up the business card he gave Ricochet while Lashley held him by the neck, but they let him leave the ring unharmed.
Benjamin stayed in the ring for his match against Mortos, while Lashley went to the back and MVP joined the commentary table.
The Gold Standard had control at first, but The Beast made a comeback and hit a few impressive moves. Unfortunately, he tripped on the top rope, which allowed Benjamin to regain the upper hand.
It wouldn't have been surprising if this was a sub-five-minute match, but they went through a break and had enough time to make this an entertaining and competitive performance.
Benjamin and Mortos quickly found their groove and had the crowd chanting and cheering for everything they did. Ultimately, though, it was the Hurt Syndicate man who scored the win and earned three points in the blue league.
Result: Benjamin defeated Mortos
Grade: B+
Notable Moments and Observations
- Benjamin suplexing Mortos like it was nothing was an impressive display of power.
- Mortos is a great worker, but he seems to only be in this tournament to give other people points.
Will Ospreay vs. Darby Allin
Mark Briscoe and Daniel Garcia came out to defend Mortos from an attack by The Hurt Syndicate, but they were quickly taken down by Bobby Lashley and Benjamin.
RJ City interviewed Toni Storm and she continued to pretend she just debuted as if the last few years of her career hadn't happened.
Back in the arena, Ospreay was out first for his C2 match against Allin.
Ospreay isn't known as a powerhouse, but against a guy like Allin, he got the chance to work like one thanks to his significant size and strength advantage. Throughout the first segment and the break, Billy Goat dominated the action.
This was an incredible display of ability from both men. They did so many difficult maneuvers with pinpoint precision and had the crowd going nuts with each move.
Ospreay hit a Styles Clash from the apron to the floor that almost led to a count-out, but Allin beat it and made a comeback with a Scorpion Death Drop and two Coffin Drops for the pin and the win.
Result: Allin defeated Ospreay
Grade: A-
Notable Moments and Observations
- Last week, Allin was trying to get Ospreay to join his fight against The Death Riders, but The Aerial Assassin was only concerned with the tournament.
- Fans on social media were happy to see Ospreay ditch the straight hair and go back to the curls.
- Allin may be small, but Ospreay picking him up by his belt with one arm was still kind of impressive.
- The series of counters that led to a Stunner was awesome.
- The crowd chanted "You killed Darby" at Ospreay after the Styles Clash.
The Death Riders vs. Orange Cassidy, Jay White and 'Hangman' Adam Page
Pac, Jon Moxley and Wheeler Yuta stared Allin down after his match, but they stuck around since they were also slated to face Cassidy, Hangman and Switchblade in the main event.
Marina Shafir and Claudio Castagnoli were at ringside because the Death Riders like having an unfair advantage at all times.
An angry Hangman told OC and White that he would start for their team, but when he saw it was Yuta starting, he tagged out to Cassidy because he only wanted to fight Moxley. OC went after his former friend immediately.
This match played out exactly as expected. Team AEW wasn't able to stay on the same page, and their issues caused them to lose when Moxley rolled up OC while Hangman and Switchblade were arguing.
The Death Riders kept the fight going after it was over while Shafir got Moxley to safety through the crowd.
Result: The Death Riders defeated Cassidy, White and Page
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
- Moxley hit a brutal throat jab to Cassidy that looked about as real as possible without actually hitting him in the throat.
- Pac is on another level when it comes to how smooth he is. Even if he makes a minor mistake, it looks intentional because he covers it up.
The Final Word
This week's Holiday Bash episode of Dynamite may have had some red-and-green color schemes and a few props lying around, but other than that, it was just like any other episode of Dynamite.
This may be due to the fact that next week's show will take place on Christmas Day, which is also the first day of Hanukkah this year. The real holiday festivities might be saved for the 25th.
The good news is this being just like any other episode of Dynamite means we still got some great wrestling across the two-hour runtime.
Both C2 matches were highly enjoyable, the TBS title bout was solid, and the two tag matches were entertaining, but Ospreay and Allin stole the show with their performance.
Five matches seems to be the formula that works best for AEW. It allows each bout to have sufficient time while also leaving time for non-wrestling segments such as interviews and backstage encounters.
The whole show was worth watching, but if you only have time for one thing, make it Ospreay vs. Allin.
Grade: B+
